Note: For reference, all Wyandotte crossings start at the West side and go East.
Picture
1 shows the West side of the crossing facing east. CN owns this track
and signals. You can see the traffic signal that says "Emergency
Signal" hanging before the crossing. This is a Preemption to stop
traffic before the gates go down. The signals protecting this track
feature 12"x24" incandesent lights. Picture 3 shows a Harmon
Electronics cantilever junction box, while picture 4 shows the crossing
ID tag. |
A Harmon Electronics gate mechanism. |
South View. You can see a train approaching in the distance. |
North View. The Vinewood Ave. crossing is in the distance. |
The gateless cantilever on the Western most track. |
The "Emergency Signal" turns yellow, indicating that the train is approaching and is seconds away from activating the signals. |
The
light is red, and the signals activate. Note the cars continuing to
cross, disregarding the red signal. The light stays red about 15
seconds before the signals activate. |
The
gates lower. Take notice that the other lights protecting the 2nd and
3rd track flash as well, even though there is no train on those tracks.
Conrail didn't set up their relays right. |
To my suprise, it wasn't a regular train. It was a rail grinder. Weird engine that is pulling the units. |
Notice the sparks flying out from underneath. I wonder what that is supposed to do? |
The
unit continues across the road at a slow pace. It stopped shooting
sparks as it went over the grade. Take note of the upside down gate. |
The last car goes over the crossing. It looks similar to a caboose. |
The gates rise. Notice how the 2nd and 3rd track lights stop as the gates begin to rise. |
The cars begin to cross. |
A CN worker follows the rail maintenance train cleaning up the junk the rail grinder left behind on the crossing. |
The signals activate again. This time, I'm on the 2nd track. Notice I caught the lights in mid-flash. |
Here is a better view with the lights lit. |
A
South view of the 2nd track. If you look closely, you can see a
Hi-Railer truck with a worker standing near the edge of the trees on
the right. That is what activated the signals. |
North View. |
Opposite
view of the 2nd track signals. Notice the cars continuing to go around
the gates regardless of the approaching Hi-Railer truck... |
The
3rd track signal, along with the relay case for the 2 middle tracks
that controls both sets of cantilevers. Conrail Owns both middle
tracks. |
Picture
25 shows the Crossing ID tag that is horribly faded. 26 shows the 3rd
track cantilever. 27 shows the WCH Mechanical bell. Take note that 2 of
the 4 cantilevers that Conrail owns have GS Electronic bells, while 2
have WCH mechanical bells. The Cantilever masts are Safetran, as well
as the 12"x24" lights. 28 shows a South view. |
Picture 29 shows a North view along with a side view of the other cantilever protecting the 3rd track. 30 is a front view. |
A view of the back side of the 4th track signal. You can see the gate is down, but the rear lights do not flash. |
||
A
view of the gateless 4th track cantilever. Notice the lights are off,
but the gate on the other cantilever is down. CN owns this track and
signals. |
This cantilever mast was made by WABCO. |
South View. |
North
View. The gates are still down. The Hi-Railer truck stopped halfway to
Vinewood Ave., reversed, then went forward confusing the signals. |
The 4th track gated cantilever. The signals finally cleared up after 5 minutes of activity. |
Facing West. |
The Crossing ID tag on the 4th track. |
A WABCO Model 75 Grade Crossing Gate Mechanism. |
This is the Traffic Light Preemption sytem control box. It is wired to the relay cases. |
Overview of the crossing on the East side, facing West. |
The relay case for the 4th track cantilevers. |
The signals activate this time for a train on the 2nd track from where I am standing. |
The train approaches. |
The train flies through the crossing at about 40 mph. |
Coming to an end shortly after this photo... |
The
train finishes crossing and the gates rise. Notice how the rear lights
on the 4th track cantilevers come on only when the gates rise. Weird,
must be wired wrong. |
