Re: You don't see this every day
I've heard that in some cases, the local environment can damage the electronics in those bells to the point where mechanical bells are a must. Either that of the e-bell broke and a mechanical bell was the only thing available.

Re: Another Griswold bites the dust
http://www.rxrsignals.net/Michigan/Owosso/Shiawassee/ If it's the same crossing as this, and if it is, that area underwent quite a development. It looks like they repaved that road and the surrounding landscaping that the signal needed to be removed in the process. That's a shame, it was a nice look...

In Arizona: All crossing in Flagstaff, William St. in Wellton, Martin St. in Gila Bend, several crossings in Downtown Phoenix, R.H. Johnson Blvd. in Surprise, 163rd Ave. in Surprise, and the crossings in Kingman will be by the end of the year.

Re: How common is this?
Based on the track condition, the railroad that owns that line probably doesn't even know the signal is like that or probably don't care since the crossing isn't used by trains. I'm not sure what the law for maintaining signals on abandoned or unused lines is, however.

Re: Why?
It's kind of hard to tell, but is it mounted on the side of the relay case? It makes me wonder if there is some audible advantage to it being there.

Substation Road -- Girard, IL
While bumming around on Google Maps looking at the new street view images, I noticed that the BNSF/UP/AMTK Substation Road crossing outside of Girard, IL has been taken out of service. http://www.rxrsignals.net/Illinois/A-K/Girard/Substation/ Here is a view on GSV: https://maps.google.com/?ll=39.464...

Re: Is it okay for these old signals to be on a busy road?
Here is one on Grand Ave. in Phoenix, one of the busiest roads in town. The line is a spur and I've only seen railcars on it about 4 times in the past 5 years. https://maps.google.com/?ll=33.549831,-112.198689&spn=0.001868,0.001725&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=33.54988,-112.199257&panoid=wb2mk7c49T1P3CRpF...

Re: Are Bryant Zinc bells still in use?
There may be some out there somewhere on a remote, seldom used line, but I don't know of any. I think the Illinois Railway Museum has one on display that works.

Re: Another Weird One
It looks like it is that way because of the street angle. The other signal has side-facing lights as well. Nice signals.
