My guess is that there was supposed to be an "ER" at the end, showing it was a crossing only for NS Roadrailer trains.

I had a whole bunch of those when I was younger. I think I might have them somewhere, only mine dont have MBTA on them. I got mine from CN/IC.

according to Wikipedia, that line was once part of Wabash (who most likely installed those signals) and it was part of Indiana Hi-Rail before it went bankrupt. It says the only thing the line is used for is car storage for NS and CSX who it interchanges with. The article says that the estimated cost...

Invensys gate mech.
This was installed in the last few months at the 91st ave crossing in Peoria, AZ. I noticed more crossings now have these installed. Has anybody else seen these?

Probably just a junction box, similar to the ones found at the bottom of cantilevers.

The Marion, IL wig-wag was installed after the rule that wig-wags weren't allowed in new installs, so they had to add regular mast lights to get around the rule.

I agree... the new one doesn't look bad. But paired with the older one it is quite a mis-match.
