The gateless cantilever on Commercial Ave (that showed the light engine move) looks like it is loose on it's mounting. Wobbled quite a bit in the wind.AndyWS wrote:Captured some of this in Madison a couple of weeks ago. Accidentally started recording with the lens cap on, and got it off just moments before the gate smacked the roof of the van.

I've observed that type of cantilever do that a lot on windy days.

I speak my mind, if you don't like that oh well. I'll have you fill out a hurt feelings report and submit that to my office.

Anything is possible, I still think it was something like a dump or concrete truck, that turned left onto Ditch rd busted through the one gate and clipped the other causing it to snap.cabman701 wrote:TrainmanKight wrote:Fiber glass gates suck,

Re: Crossing Gate Contact
As some people know, I occasionally provide service for the BNSF Sumas Subdivision by helping maintain the signals and track conditions.
About one month ago, I got to take a cab ride in the BNSF shunter down to Lynden and learn how to flip junctions. On our way, we had to pass by this crossing.
https://maps.google.com/?ll=48.962751,- ... 4,,0,-1.12
The road is extremely busy. It connects the northern outskirts of Lynden and goes up into Abbotsford B.C., track speeds are slow, maybe 10-15 MPH at the most due to extremely jointed rail. The line was originally ran by the Milwaukee Road as their mainline and they barely took any care of it until the very end of their existance.
The signals start very early and the amount of cars speeding past was horrifying. We had to completely stop alltogether because we we're about 2 milliseconds from running over some Canadian who STOPPED right on the tracks. His explanation was that his kids we're wanting to see the train (and they wonder why we Americans make fun of them).
That's not all, on the way back, we had to cross here.
https://maps.google.com/?ll=48.99396,-1 ... 4&t=h&z=20
When the gates came down, some anti coal jack@$$ came out with a sledgehammer and BROKE THE GATE with it. He then went on to throw stones at the train and threatened to "blow the mother ing "Man" up". He is currently spending 4-5 years in jail and is not allowed to come around the area anymore.
All in all, it was quite some day. While it was fun switching Lynden, I still won't forget the fear I had violently blowing the horn at SR 546 and climbing the top of the reefer to save my crew from disaster.
Sadly, I didn't have my camera with me, it truly was a great day though and just shows how extreme it really is to be part of the great railroad.

I also have a story involving a crazy neighbor during a speeder-cart excursion, I'll save it for later though.
