Looks like it was done to avoid having a wishbone gate hit the lights. Neat that they still only have one pair of lights though!

The signals at this crossing had their gates removed. This is on a tourist line. Do they even operate?

Nearby is an older Raco cantilever

Judging by the bed still in place beyond the end, the line continued from here.

That's actually an old L&N WRRS install there, including that old WRRS cantilever!

There are some Youtube video's of that operation... it is called the St. Mary's railroad. In this video, it appears the gate motors have been removed from the signals. As you can see... the signals seem to be somewhat operating (no lights on the signal closest to the camera). I'm guessing due to this, the crossing is being flagged as well.

Actually, I think the gate is positioned like that so it doesn't hit the overhead power poles.
That's exactly the reason why it isn't all the way up. It would be bad if the gate were to strike the power lines. Here's a few crossings on the site like that which have gates not all the way up to avoid hitting power lines:

http://www.rxrsignals.com/Alabama/Talladega/Battle/
http://www.rxrsignals.com/Alabama/Talladega/17/

This crossing in my hometown is like this, however it's days are numbered as they are pushing to put in an underpass here:
https://www.google.com/maps/@39.7792171 ... 6656?hl=en

I've always wondered it this causes extra wear on the gate motor... having to hold the gates in that position?
Sorry for the bump... but the end is coming for this crossing. The have begun the process of putting an underpass here. The street is still open for now, but expected to close in the next few weeks, which means the signals here will be put out of service soon.
