Unfortunately all the wishbone gates on that line have since been replaced by more modern flat gates, not a big deal though.

Sadly, pretty much all the gateless crossings you’ve posted have since been upgraded with gates and e-bells or are about to be. That Teardrop bell at Cowslip Street, Violet Town has also since been replaced with a hybrid bell.

The “90 degree crossbuck” you’ve found is actually a whistle board used to let drivers know they have to sound their horn for an upcoming crossing. The nearby Nunn Street crossing (in Benalla) still has the Teardrop bell as far as I know (along with the hybrid bell).

And yes, these crossings have been posted numerous times before...

More vintage equipment has gone from the Sydney - Melbourne line. Went past the crossing at Nubba today and it now has new signals. Sadly that means the end of the Federal Signal bell, WRRS/GRS Type D gate mechs and the last black & white wishbone gate in NSW. Predictably the new signals have WCH gate mechs and e-bells, strangely they have United Group lights mounted on WCH brackets.

The upgade of Nubba now means that the last wishbone gates in NSW are at Wentworth St, Greenacre. They were still there yesterday.

Also went past the crossing at Bethungra which now has new signals. Gone are the WRRS/GRS Type B gate mechs and the WRRS bells, although they did leave the gateless signal with the very old pair of McK&H lights. The new gated signals are the same as Nubba except they have WCH lights.

This leaves the crossing at Illabo as the last in NSW (and possibly Australia) to have WRRS/GRS Type B gate mechs. Wasn't able to take any pictures but hopefully I can do so on a future trip.

That’s some depressing news although I am hardly surprised. It’s shocking that Illabo is the last crossing in NSW to have Type B gate mechs. Were there any changes at Tanyinna since it was getting a “major upgrade?”

I wonder if Nubba got United Group lights because they wanted to use the last of them? I am glad my Dad saved the black and white Wishbone gates from Singleton since they are now extinct in NSW.

That’s just so disappointing, ARTC are slowly becoming more like John Holland now.

That makes me wonder if they’ll upgrade other crossings with have already been modernised somewhat such as Junee (old gate mechs replaced), Olympic Highway, Illabo (one gated signal replaced after the pervious was destroyed in 2006), and Cowcumbia Street, Cootamundra (old gate mechs replaced).

Also, I’m pretty sure the crossings at Oakover Road, Preston and Millers Road, Seaholme in surban Melbourne are now the only crossings in Australia to still have black & white wishbone gates (and even then, they may have been replaced recently).

Couldn't see any changes at Tanyinna, it is due to be upgraded this weekend but there wasn't any machinery or equipment waiting there in readiness. I guess they must have been using up the last United Group lights at Nubba, or they were running short of the WCH ones.

Sure is great that your dad saved those black & white wishbone gates, I wonder if any museums even bothered to save some?

ARTC must have some kind of long term plan to replace the remaining older equipment, but the partially modernised crossings would most likely be last. In the case of Junee they don't seem to have replaced the dead teardrop bell, even though it's been almost two years and they've had loads of replacement bells available from other upgraded crossings (the almost new m-bell from Cunningar comes to mind).

There is the possibility that the Junee teardrop didn't die but was disconnected due to probems with the underground wires coming from the relay case, they may have even "borrowed" the bell wires to keep something else working (lights or gate mech). If so then it may be a higher priority for upgrading.

Lets hope that those two crossings in Melbourne still have their black & white gates!

Found a video showing the m-bells at Belford Ave, Devon Park (Adelaide) have been replaced. What is interesting however is that the replacements are WCH e-bells! I wonder if Adelaide Metro has ditched Siemens in favour of WCH?

It's nice to see some WCH e-bells on the Adelaide Metro network, I'm surprised that they even used Safetran/Siemens e-bells as they've mostly used WCH equipment for everything else. Don't even recall seeing any Safetran/Siemens gate mechs when I was in Adelaide, aside from the tram crossings.

Siemens have made some improvements to the control circuitry in their gate mechanisms according to this update...
http://download.siemens.com.au/index.ph ... c_id=20521

I fear that this may have come too late for the railways to change their minds and start using Siemens mechs again. Would be nice to see some of the new Siemens mechs with the cast logo rather than the old stickers, certainly would give some more variety from the WCH mechs which are everywhere now.

You have to wonder if they will now do something to improve their e-bells!
