Just drove over the crossing tonight and spotted the new gates midway through installation. I had a bad feeling about this because they had closed the pedestrian crossing about a week earlier for works and while I had my intial doubts, it’s turns out my fears were realised.

I don’t know why they’re doing this because I can’t recall seeing any mention of a pedestrian crossing upgrade at McGregor Road, and it doesn’t seem to be as utilised as the one on the other side which was installed back in 2012.

Also found this on the LXRA site, looks like they’re going to prioritise 25 more crossings for future removal (most likely after 2022).
https://levelcrossings.vic.gov.au/media ... g-removals

Some of the candidates are no surprises (like Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing and Union Road, Surrey Hills), but there’s still some I don’t think there’s any point to removing (like Reynard Street, Coburg).
That's sad news about the Westinghouse pedestrian gates being replaced. It sure is difficult to understand why some crossings are upgraded before others.

Seems like the Andrews Government feels it is on a winner (politically speaking) with their level crossing removals, so they want to announce more. I fear there is political influence involved in selecting which crossings are being removed, and the money doesn't always go where it is needed most.
If I was the one who runs Victoria’s rail infrastructure, I would have installed those pedestrian gates at Racecourse Road instead. There’s currently none at the location and I’ve seen a lot of pedestrians cross the rails on the Gippsland side of the crossing. One day someone’s going to trip over the tracks and end up injuring themselves, but logic doesn’t seem to apply when it comes to upgrades at Victorian crossings. :2cents:

The aforementioned LXRA page also has this PDF on it explains the framework for prioritising extra crossings for removal, I suggest giving it a read for a better understanding of why they’ve selected those crossings shown on the page.
https://levelcrossings.vic.gov.au/__dat ... mework.pdf

Also of note is the inclusion of Oakover Road, Preston which is unfortunate because the crossing has one of the few surviving black and white boom gates in Melbourne. Chances are though it would have been replaced by the time they get around to removing it (which is probably still many years away).

Victoria isn't alone there, as NSW also uses some strange logic when dealing with crossing upgrades. A good example is the pedestrian crossing at Marulan Station https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-34.709 ... 308,18.07z which had GRS semaphore gates similar to those at Exeter and Penrose. It was recently upgraded with swing gates and new pathways, while two stations further north at Wingello there is no pedestrian crossing despite the road crossing being next to the railway station, bus stop and shops. While filming there recently I witnessed many people walking on the road to cross the tracks, or walking on the tracks next to the crossing. It hardly seems fair (or safe) to be upgrading an existing crossing which is adequate for the task, while another location goes without.

Yes it's a shame about Oakover Rd, Preston. As you said the black & white gates won't last until the crossing is removed, and they are just one careless driver away from being destroyed. I did read the PDF about the latest crossing removal, there is some interesting information there and it's good to see some future planning, but sadly much of it is long term and at least two elections away, with lots of potential for future political interference or cancellations.

One thing that received little mention in the report (and what annoys me) is there seems to be no plans for improving the remaining crossings which aren't slated for removal. NSW is guilty of this also. Level crossings are portrayed as dangerous and congestion causing, but the reality is most of them are using the same (or similar) methods of activation and train detection as they were 50 years ago. As mentioned in the report, there is a big cause of delays when gates are closed while trains are stopped at nearby stations, with gates often remaining closed for two or three trains. With today's technology the duration of gate closures can be greatly reduced by enhancing the train detection and signalling systems around crossings, but neither NSW or VIC seem motivated to invest in such technology. End of rant lol.

Found some freight only crossings in Perth with interesting equipment, sadly all these crossings have now either been upgraded or grade separated. :Awww:

Kewdale Road, Kewdale - This crossing had a Teardrop bell and WCH gate mechs in 2008.

That’s a shame so many nice crossings have either been removed or upgraded. I’ve noticed most new Western Australian installations use Safetran bases which I haven’t seen used anywhere else in Australia. I will be going to Perth and possibly the Pilbara next year around September and October so hopefully some interesting equipment survives.

From what I’ve seen, all of the crossings on the Perth suburban network still have m-bells although there has been a sad upgrade. This crossing in Kelmscott used to have a Safetran m-bell but both signals have sadly since been replaced and now have WCH m-bells.

One crossing I do want to visit if I get the time to visit the Pilbara is this one along the Great Northern Hwy, Boodarie. The crossing is owned by Roy Hill and GSV shows the rail line still under construction. https://www.google.com.au/maps/place/Na ... 405a75fa2c The crossing has some interesting and rare equipment including US&S e-bells and gate mechs. I think the lights and LEDs are also US&S but I'm probably wrong.

This is quite a cool photo and shows GE ES44ACi Roy Hill unit RHA 1016 on it’s delivery run through the crossing!

I might also be able to check this crossing at Rudds Gully Rd, Narngulu which still had a WCH and Safetran m-bell combination in June 2015.

Changing the topic slightly, found some updated images of two crossings in Coorparoo QLD showing the WRRS gate mechs have been replaced by new US&S mechs! Queensland has used Safetran/Siemens mechs in recent years so maybe they’ve ditched Siemens gate mechs as well!

Went past the crossing at Paterson today and the dead older model Safetran Type 3 has been replaced by a newer model one. It must’ve been replaced in the last 2 weeks and I was hoping that an m-bell would replace it or at least a WCH e-bell.

It surprises me that ARTC still installs these bells despite the fact they would have to be well known for dying by now. Clyde St, Islington Junction recently got a WCH e-bell so I guess they still have a few lying around.

Sadly that's a wasted opportunity to install a decent bell. The saying goes something like "the definition of insanity is repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting a different result", will be interesting to see how long the new bell lasts :LOL3:

Looks like my worst prayers have been answered, Daniel Andrews has just announced a plan to remove all level crossings in Pakenham with a skyrail.
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-11-01/ ... s/10455368
https://www.smh.com.au/politics/victori ... e=rss_feed

I can tell that this is part of a plan to attract voters in the marginal electorate of Bass which is currently held by the Liberals (Pakenham is located in this seat). Apparently it will be nearly 3 kilometres long! Funnily enough, they'll have to remove quite a lot of infrastructure that's been installed recently...

For instance, the current signals at Cardina Road only date back to 2016 when the road was duplicated.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-38.070 ... 312!8i6656

The nearby Cardina Road train station will probably need to be rebuilt too (despite opening in 2012).
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-38.072 ... 312!8i6656

As I've mentioned before, they're currently installing new pedestrian gates at McGregor Road. If the plan goes ahead, this upgrade would be pretty pointless IMO.
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-38.077 ... 312!8i6656

How about those new WCH gate mechs at the Main Street?
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-38.079 ... 312!8i6656

Worse of all, they're replacing all the overhead wires and gantries as part of the High Capacity Metro project. So all the brand new overhead lines will need to be removed again once they finish the project! :LOL4:

I happen to have news on the Elmhurst - Glenpatrick Road on the Ararat Maryborough Line on October 21st, as I saw this crossing is getting boom gates

Here is what the crossing looked like from about the 1950's to February 2018
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.176 ... 312!8i6656

And then from February to September or October:
[]

This crossing has two Safetran Type 3's

As you can see the signage has been switched around

Such a waste of money to install stop signs that would only last a few months. :Curse1:
