More WCH e-bells in Stoughton, MA...

Post by wilek209 » Mon Sep 24, 2012 7:56 pm

This time, two more MBTA-owned crossings switched from mechanical bells to the WCH electronic bells that the MBTA has been using lately...

With the latter, even though the bell was replaced, it STILL has no gates! That's a rare sight on an MBTA-owned railroad crossing!

Pretty sad that electronic bells are coming in, if the bell was dying or right by the water I would understand.

Even though I don't really mind the sound of those e-bells, I don't like them as much as the mechanical bells. I especially like the Safetran mechanical bells; many crossings in my area still use them!

BTW, when are updates going to resume on the main rxrsignals.net website? I'd like to submit these updates along with a crossing that isn't there yet.

On the subject ofd WCH bells, I just had one at a newer crossing that is maybe a year and a half old, die. (WCH mechanical bell) It was pitiful sounding from the start.

No more WCH for me, period. Sorry Kighty.
Just the facts, ma'am.

....Not unless you can weld all the pieces back together, that was a pretty long drop.

The other two they put up a couple of months ago do the same thing. I am through with them, I specifically ask WCH does NOT be used.

The MBTA still uses WCH though, but only their e-bells, I think.
It's too bad Safetran doesn't make mechanical bells anymore. Those are the crossing bells I am the most familiar with (many MBTA-owned crossings in my area still use them, and they're definitely attention-grabbing, especially when they are set to ring the whole time the lights are flashing.)

Of course, there is no reason to have the bell set to ring after the gates have lowered, unless it is a "quiet crossing", as a train horn will drown out whatever benefit they may offer.
