Shame to see the 8" lights going the way of the Doo Doo bird. I have never cared for the look of the 12" lights. Guess I am just old fashioned and prefer the older 8 inchers, be them cast iron or cast alum. Mike

That's Daniel Andrew's theme song, and you probably know why.

More 8 inch lights are now gone, this time off of the CCKY in Georgia. This crossing in Rossville, GA recently had the Safetran 8 inch lights replaced with 12x24 inch LED lights, though I'm not sure what the LEDs and light heads are. However, the overhead 12x20 inch lights remain untouched. The new lights can be seen in this video:

Whelp, got some more sad news to report. Ridgedale Road in Scottsboro, AL has had all of its 8 inch lights replaced with incandescent Safetran 12x20 inch lights, though the WCH mechanical bell still remains. No idea if the Houston Street crossing in Scottsboro has been upgraded yet or not though, so I'll need to go back and check, but I can say that as of today, these crossings along the NS Memphis District East End & active parts of the branches still retain 8 inch lights:
  • Willow Street (AL 35), Scottsboro, AL
  • AL 65, Paint Rock, AL
  • Brownsboro Road, Brownsboro, AL
  • Church Street, Madison, AL
Video of the upgraded Ridgedale Road will be posted shortly.
They/Them for me, please.

Bump, got more to report from the Memphis East:

Turns out sometime recently, NS did a couple more upgrades to crossings out in Jackson County, replacing 3 pairs of the 8 inch lights at Houston Street in Scottsboro, and replacing the bell-less signal at AL 65 in Paint Rock.

Interestingly enough, at Houston Street, the signal with the bell only had the front lights replaced with Safetran 12x24 inch lights, while the bell-less signal had the lights replaced with the Modern Industries 12x24 inch lights from the old bell-less signal at Bellefonte Road in Hollywood!

Like I said, over at AL 65, the bell-less signal there was replaced entirely for some reason, with the "new" signal having two pairs of older Safetran 12x24 inch lights and re-using one of the pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights from the old signal. However, NS left the old DOT sticker on the mast, which let me find out that the "new" signal was the bell-less signal that was at Jackson Street in Courtland, AL!

These active crossings along the line still retain all of their 8 inch lights:
  • Willow Street (AL 35), Scottsboro, AL
  • Brownsboro Road, Brownsboro, AL
  • Church Street, Madison, AL
Dick Hayes Road in Scottsboro also likely still has 8 inch lights, though it's out of service, so I doubt NS would upgrade that one (especially since Willow Street still has 8 inch lights).

Got the new signal in Paint Rock recorded a few days ago, still need to see about getting back out to Scottsboro and getting Houston Street's upgrade recorded.
