Train v. Truck caught on camera in Bangor, PA

Post by freebrickproductions » Wed Jul 05, 2017 10:46 pm

This video was linked to me by a friend over Facebook, so here's the video as presented in its original form:

From the description:
Description wrote: The H74 rockets up the hill with 2 SD70ACes and a Dash 9 only to have a WCT semi pull out in front of them. The train clips the front end of the Peterbilt before stopping a little ways down the line, leaving the driver dazed, but unhurt. After emergency services responded, the train was inspected, and sent on its way to Portland. Meanwhile, I was giving this video to police officers and Norfolk Southern crash inspectors. And guess what? THE DRIVER SAID THE CROSSINGS WERE NOT ON WHEN HE CAME TO THE TRACKS!!! Obviously, this video proves him a liar. I showed this video the the cops to prove so, and they went back and charged him. Now he'll be able to look back on this mistake which will hopefully keep him from running the tracks in the future.

And I found these articles from a local news company while looking for the location of the incident:

Article 1 wrote: Train, truck collide near Bangor library

BY TONY RHODIN arhodin@lehighvalleylive.com,
For lehighvalleylive.com

A train and a truck crashed late Tuesday morning just behind Bangor's public library, authorities said.

No injuries were immediately reported in the 11:58 a.m. incident near Broadway and South Main Street.

The northbound Norfolk Southern train struck the tractor-trailer at a "highway-rail-grade crossing," a corporate spokesman said just before 1:15 p.m.

The truck, in a Facebook photo, appeared to have minor front-end damage.

A person who answered the phone at the library at 39 S. Main St. said she saw the train but not the truck. She saw a police vehicle as well, she added.

Trains run regularly behind the library, she said.

Bangor police will provide a report later, an official said.

A tractor-trailer driver crossed through a flashing railroad signal Tuesday in Bangor, leading to a collision with an oncoming train, according to police.

The front of the cab was only a few inches into the path of the train, but it was enough for the train to catch onto and twist, borough police said.

No one was reported injured. The crossing on Route 512 was closed about three hours, police Chief Scott Felchock said.

Crew members on the train saw the truck and went into emergency mode to brake in time, said Jonathan Glass, spokesman for the railroad operator, Norfolk Southern Corp.

No one was reported injured, and there was no danger to the public after a Norfolk Southern train collided with the front of this tractor-trailer Tuesday, June 27, 2017, on Route 512 in Bangor, according to borough police. (Courtesy photo | For lehighvalleylive.com)

Track speed at that crossing is 30 mph, and this train had three engines and 67 loaded railcars, Glass said. For perspective, a freight train traveling at 55 mph can take a mile or more to stop, he said. The train was in local service, transporting mostly grain.

The train cargo was reported to be non-combustible material and there was no danger to the public, Felchock said in a news release.

The truck, belonging to Upper Mount Bethel Township-based Warren County Trucking, had been traveling east on Route 512 when it was struck, police said. Damage to the cab was confined to its front end.

The male driver of the truck was the lone occupant, and will likely be cited under motor vehicle carrier law following an investigation opened by Bangor and Norfolk Southern police, according to Felchock.

Investigators ruled out alcohol or drugs as factors, the police chief said.

Police were withholding the name of the driver, who police said is 47 years old, pending the outcome of the investigation.

The trucking company declined to comment on the incident. It describes itself on its Facebook page as being involved in land-clearing and hauling and delivering mulch.

Article 3 wrote: WATCH: Train enthusiast catches Bangor truck collision on video

[YouTube video above is embedded in this part of the page]

BY KURT BRESSWEIN kbresswein@lehighvalleylive.com,
For lehighvalleylive.com

A railroad enthusiast awaiting the pass of a three-locomotive train in Bangor caught Tuesday's collision with a tractor-trailer on high-definition video.

The videographer, a young man who calls himself Austin Trains on his YouTube account, has his camera trained on a bend in the railroad just south of the Route 512 crossing where the crash occurred.

He pans quickly right as the Peterbilt cab passes beyond the crossing's flashing lights and its front end is clipped by the train.

The action starts around minute-marker 0:28 on the video above.

Bangor police were continuing to investigate the crash Wednesday, Chief Scott Felchock said. He had said the driver, a 47-year-old man working for Warren County Trucking, will likely be cited under Pennsylvania motor vehicle carrier law.

The enthusiast who caught Tuesday's crash on camera said he was out for a photo of the train pulled by a Norfolk Southern H74 locomotive joined by "2 SD70ACes and a Dash 9." Norfolk Southern said Tuesday the train was on a local service route with 67 loaded railcars carrying mostly grain.

[Second photo from the second article is shown again here, along with the same description.]

"This is crazy," the videographer says as he turns the camera on himself and narrates what had just happened, relaying that he checked to ensure no one was injured.

The train crew went into emergency mode and stopped the train soon after the collision. The crossing was closed for about three hours.

Thank goodness nobody was hurt. However, I can tell you right now for sure the truck driver is going to get a citation.

Looks like a pair of 2-way signals!

There's also this cool nearby crossing with mini-bells on the masts!

Fixed-face signals in set-ups other than standard 4-way set-ups are pretty rare to find. Seattle has quite a few 1-ways and 2-ways in their downtown still though:

Interesting! I didn't realize that those were traffic signal lights and not railroad crossing lights.

Last I heard, those were still there. Wouldn't be surprised if Seattle replaced them though...
