Man struck and killed by MerseyRail train.

Post by NathanFromEngland » Wed Dec 20, 2017 9:50 am

Just found out that a person has sadly died after he was struck by a Merseyrail train this morning.
A person has died after being struck by a Merseyrail train just outside Birkdale.

Tragically the person, whose identity isn’t yet public, was dead before emergency services arrived at the scene.

The incident which happened at 9.51am this morning caused trains travelling the route between Birkdale and Hillside stations to be suspended for several hours.

British Transport Police, Ambulances and Network Rail staff were all on the scene for several hours this morning.

A train which is believed to be involved in the incident, and which was filled with passengers, was held by authorities at Birkdale while police carried out their investigations.

In a statement the British Transport Police said: “BTP officers were called to the Birkdale station area today to reports that a person had been struck by a train.

“The call came in to police at 9.51am.

“Officers attended along with the ambulance service and sadly a person was found to have died at the scene.

“The incident is not currently being treated as suspicious.

“Officers are working to identify the person and inform their next of kin.”

A replacement bus service ran while the scene was examined, but the route has since reopened.

In a statement on Twitter, Merseyrail said: “Services on the Southport and Hunts Cross line are about to resume,

“Services remain subject to severe delay and possible cancellation due to a person struck by train. Apologies for any delay this morning.”

The accident happened near this crossing. This level crossing is the only one with half barriers on the Southport to Hunts Cross line.

What i probably presumed has happened, is that the person tried to outpace the train, but was struck in trying to do so.

This isn't the first time however, multiple incidents have happened at this crossing
In 2008, a 57 year old woman (Who was dressed as a clown for what i believe was a birthday party) misjudged a turn onto Dover Road, and drove straight onto the tracks accidentally, nobody was thankfully injured.
In August 2016, a train struck a car on the same crossing, nobody was injured on the train, but the driver of the car had to be treated for shock.
