Re: Accident in Canton, MI
I feel nothing but profound sadness when I read this article. 5 teenagers, who had their whole lives ahead of them, paid the ultimate price for one incredibly bad decision . My heart goes out to their families.

Heres a video of what happened from a nearby surveillance camera.
You can see the Black Ford Fusion go by the white SUV sitting at the crossing.

Here's another video about this accident that shows the crossing and the signals. It kind of looks like the lights are 8 inch, but it's hard to tell. Obviously the SORS sign didn't do any good.

Update: I just found the crossing on Street View. The signals do have 8 inch lights it appears.

Re: Accident in Canton, MI
Well, even though the gate stripes were slanted, I'd still put the blame on the driver anyways. I mean look at his record? Suspended license? He was not a very safe driver. It's a shame that he took 4 people with him.
Sure the gate stripes are crooked, and even though they should be on the correct way, I don't think it's that big of a deal to me. The lights were flashing, and the gates were down. In my opinion, it was just poor judgement on someone who shouldn't had driven in the first place.
While there was some small fault in the railroad, I'd still put the blame at the driver at 95% vs. 5% for the railroad. If the railroad does get fined, I feel it should be a bit over the amount of the salary who put this gate up.
