WC Hayes M Bells @ Drawbridges

Post by BBT609 » Mon Apr 03, 2017 1:15 am

It has been a while since I've posted to The Forum but one thing I started noticing with the rehabilitation of drawbridges here in South Florida, I started to notice that the mechanical bells that they're using are made from WC HAYES with a much higher pitched gong. I have videos two drawbridges with Western Cullen Hayes mechanical Bells. One is State Road A1A at the Hillsboro Inlet in Pompano Beach, Florida and the other is the newly renovated or actually should I say newly built Flagler Memorial Bridge in West Palm Beach, Florida. :Check:

WCH mechanical bells seems to be pretty popular with drawbridges, especially the WCH 0666 motor bells. There also appears to be a company that's taken the molds for the 1st & 2nd Generation WCH 0333 bells and blanked-out the logo on the back. Can't say that for sure, but these bells do look rather suspicious:

I also have to wonder who makes/made these motor-bells:

They/Them for me, please.

Those motorized bells are made by the B&B Engineering Corporation in Chicago. They still make them I presume, the ones in Miami on Brickell Avenue (US1) still hold their ground today!
But yea, WC Hayes have been showing up at these newly renovated and rebuilt drawbridges.

In fact, motor-bells go all the way back to the Bryant Zinc/RRS days! Here's a (dead) one for a draw-bridge in Sacramento, CA:

The other side uses a working WCH motor-bell though:

WOW!!1 So firest Bryant & Zync/RRW, then WRRS, then WC Hayes. Motorized bells I have seen ontop of crossing signals in South Carolina...saw ONLY ONE here in Florida but it's not a E dinger (electronic "bells" don't ring, they ding). Here's video of Brickell Ave in Downtown Miami in operation. The bells are B&B Engineering Corporation.

You forgot Federal Signal in that list.

Nice video, BTW! How they sound reminds me of the nose-bells that the CNW used.

Actually, Federal Signal was the one who owned Western Cullen. WCH even says so on their site:
http://www.wch.com/aboutwch.htm
In 1953, the Company, then a major supplier of railroad signal and warning devices, was purchased by J. Patrick Lannon and the Company became a Division of Western Industries, Inc. The Company was again purchased in 1968, this time by the Federal Signal Corporation, which specialized in all types of signal equipment. In 1970 Federal Signal Corporation purchased the Hayes Track Appliance Co. of Richmond, Indiana. A family owned Company, which specialized in manufacturing and selling maintenance of way products including derails, bumping posts, wheel stops, and related accessory items. The two companies combined into one division, known as the Western-Cullen Division of the Federal Signal Corporation.
They/Them for me, please.
