Re: Gate Mech slid down to the base!
Most of the crossing there are so poorly maintained to be honest.
This really irritated me though, new signal lacking gate and damaged lighthead!

Rather interestingly, it uses an Invensys mechanism, the line is also BNSF owned but it seems as if they don't care about the way the signals are kept, not sure why the FRA isn't chasing them up about the condition of them.

It's probably a lightly-used branch line.

Re: Gate Mech slid down to the base!
Those crossings are on the abandoned BNSF harbor sub. Its all being torn up soon for a light rail line. Also I live close to those crossings so maybe I can get a couple pics! Also have you found any rare crossing stuff in LA? Thanks!
Re: Gate Mech slid down to the base!
You have to trace back to the East a long way... first you'll come across a removed diamond. If you go Eastward more, you'll find the end of the inactive track, removed rail and a derail at this location.
Well,
Re: Gate Mech slid down to the base!
Curious about this signal's meaning further up the active (maybe?) portion of the line...
Well,

That line would be a good place to start. Some nice old & classic equipment along both the abandoned and active portions of it.flat train wrote: ↑Sat Feb 29, 2020 1:02 pmThose crossings are on the abandoned BNSF harbor sub. Re: Gate Mech slid down to the base!
I am quite a bit late but i have recorded quite a bit of these crossing on the active portion of the Harbor Sub, the entire line used to get 2 dozen trains a day until it was replaced by the Alameda Corridor in 2002, today, the 2nd half of the line is still used with about 4 trains a day. The Malabar yard on the beginning of the line in Vernon is also used about 2 times daily but will close some time next year, the reason some of the crossings on the abandoned portion were upgraded and replaced was in case the Alameda corridor would have an emergency, BNSF trains could run down the Harbor Line. So they maintained some of the signals until about 2017, when LA Metro bought the entire line, even the active portion, they plan to turn the abandoned portion into a light rail, although progress has been made, it is taking a loooonnng time. Just about every signal except for some of the crossing next to malabar yard and the active portion have been removed. I should have documented these signals but i was 1 year too late. The Harbor Sub is my fave line in LA, I always enjoy seeing and recording those old installs!

The Harbor sub is (was) filled with WRRS and RACO installs, with some of the bells being side mounted! About 1/3 of the line had extremely rare GRS Type D gate mechs, I believe only 2 are on active lines now, both in the greater LA area. I believe BNSF knows this line is a fan fave so they try not to replace much stuff, the most bizzare thing they have done on this line was replaced a RACO bell with a GS Type 3 and then replace that with a WCH Mech bell. In a span of 3 years. Most of the crossings on the line are quite original as well, most are 1960s ATSF installs with some 80s stuff sprinkled in there as well.
Ive said too much have I?
