Re: CSX Engine Retirements

Ya know, I completely called it. I've been predicting that the SD50s would be retired since the start of this thread, and now that traffic is starting to slow again (which is part of the reason why NS is reducing the number of leased locomotives they're using), it makes sense as to why CSX would go ahead and retire a few hundred of them.

Also, rumor has it that the remaining three AC6000CWs (CSX 600 - CSX 602) might be getting retired in the near future. Last I heard, they were in storage in Waycross, GA.

Also, here's a detailed list for the remaining SD50s and SD60s from CSX Locomotives on Facebook:

Why does one say "Recommended Retirement" when it already says "Ret."?

Maybe it was recommended by someone (either the FRA or a higher-up in CSX) to retire it? That'd be a question for the people at the CSX Locomotives page though.

CSX has now completely gotten rid of their SD60's, and there is a sole surviving SD60I, and nearly all of the SD50's have been retired, so now only four lucky ones remain. One of the CW44AC's was also retired due to fire damage.
CSX Locomotive Roster Update As of 01 February 2019

Welcome to this month’s CSX Locomotive Roster Update! This update covers all changes discovered since 01 January, 2019.

This report represents to the best of our knowledge, the working CSX locomotive roster. There are always changes we are not yet aware of – if you think you’ve spotted a new repaint, let us know!

This month’s update is the largest we’ve ever posted – with over 200 retirements plus the standard handful of other repaints. .

On tap below are the current roster metrics, now that CSX has essentially wiped the fleet clean of SD60s and SD50-2s. A few hold-outs remain, but those are also likely headed for the door. Note that the SD50-3s are remaining on the roster for now.

Still coming in the next few months are SD70ACe-T4 deliveries, and it sounds like they’re starting up both SD70AC and CW44AC rebuild programs. Tis the rumor, anyway.

Any questions? Comment below!

freebrickproductions wrote:Ya know, I completely called it.

Indeed, a batch of CW44AC/Hs are getting equipped with cab signals and notched plows for operation on segments of the railroad which require them, especially around the Northeast. This will replace the SD60 fleet, which once held down many of these duties.
It turns out, although i may be wrong ,that CSX has decided to use the CW44AC/H's for the NYC area.

I have seen a CW44AH (AC4400CW) trailing in an autorack train up in Bowling Green, KY though.

Well, CSX does have a little over 600 of them. All of the AC44CWs from 559 and above (so 559-599 and 5100-5122) were built with cab signals (and even built with YN3 paint), but I wouldn't be surprised if another 100 or so, if not the rest of them eventually, are getting cab signals added to them.

Re: CSX Engine Retirements

Seems like a new CSX heritage unit was suddenly retired with no source of explanation. (CSX 1776)
Another Heritage unit has also been retired (CSX 527)
CSX Locomotive Roster Update As of 01 April 2019

Welcome to this month’s CSX Locomotive Roster Update! This update covers all changes discovered since 01 March, 2019.

This report represents to the best of our knowledge, the working CSX locomotive roster. There are always changes we are not yet aware of – if you think you’ve spotted a new repaint, let us know!

This month’s update is another smaller one, with a handful of repaints, and another of the SD50-2s off the roster. We have two heritage-related changes, with the 527 receiving a sticker and the 1776 being a wholly new repaint and number, coming from the 3112.

No additional news on the upcoming SD70 rebuild program, nor the SD70ACe-T4s, but both shouldn’t be too far into the future now.

Any questions? Comment below!
