NE Severe Weather

Post by weatherdan882002 » Sun Jun 06, 2010 2:15 pm

We've had wild weather in the northeast yesterday and today. Tornado watches were issued for both days and today we had 3 tornado warnings. The atmosphere wasn't terrible unstable, but there was so much sheer aloft that it caused many of the thunderstorm cells to rotate, thus issuing the tornado warnings and watches. The last line just moved through our area, so we should be good from here.

Kind of reminds me a little bit of what happened here a few weeks ago. On a clear day, we had a microburst gust to around 70 MPH hit the house. Nothing happened, but I was outside, and had to run inside really quickly, as dust and visibilities dropped quickly from miles to less than 1/4 mile in a matter of 10 seconds.

Still not quite as bad tornadoes, but still something to report on...

Glad the storms are out of your way for a while.

Today there were numerous tornado warnings across Massachusetts. After the line passed our area apparently things really developed.

Well, lots of people got several inches of rain due to yesterday's storm system. My location, however, didn't get much more than .25". BUT, we're about to do it all over again as what's left of Nicole is coming up the coast combined with an area of low pressure ahead of it. The first batch of heavy rain is supposed to hit central NY and leave us with showers, but the second installment is supposed to come through during the evening with rainfall rates reaching 1"-2" per hour, thus despite our huge deficit of rainfall (we're 7"+ below average), we're under a flood watch in anticipation of all that rain falling in such a short time. ANother bad factor will be the winds. A tight pressure gradient is expected to develop and wind gusts are expected to reach up to 60 MPH, especially in the mountains. I'm in the valley so our winds won't be as bad, but the potential is still there for those high winds. We're under a high wind watch right now that that is expected to be upgraded to either a high wind warning or a wind advisory.

Lots of wacky weather this week!

3.72" of rain! That's how much fell in the past 36 hours, most of which fell overnight last night. Lots of streets and basements under water still, even boats broke free from their docks leading to rescue workers rounding them all up. Some areas recieved as much as 7"-8"! Had we not had a rainfall deficit of more than 7", everyone says the flooding could have reached epic levels. But the rain waters have ceased and now we have the next four days to dry out.
