38th Season of TPIR

Post by Arizona_Mike » Thu Jul 09, 2009 2:20 pm

There's news floating all over the place now about the upcoming 38th season of The Price is Right.... It looks like a "5th Door" (a big huge screen on the turntable) is on its way, new showcase podiums, and new IUFB (Item Up For Bid) displays are a few changes... I'm kinda excited to see what happens... I'm gonna try and go while out in Phoenix... It's about a 5-6 hour drive....

I've been hearing that the One bids and showcase podiums are now TV monitors. It'll be interesting to see how they work, and see if they do anything besides show numbers and flash.

I don't lke the TV monitors. TPiR was always unique to me because of the displays they used. If they use TV monitors for everything, it's no longer unique. I do recall a while back that the parts needed to make the one item displays work is obsolete, so if they do break, they'd have to bend over backwards in order to get them fixed, so redoing the displays would probably solve that problem.

I think they could've looked semi-decent if they duplicated the fonts that the older readouts displayed.

Both fonts for the one-bid and the showcase podiums have the fonts recreated already. It wouldn't be hard to put them in.

I would be surprised if they try to duplicate the old fonts and stuff... it obviously sounds like their intent is to "jazz things up" and try to make at least some of the show a little more modern to appeal to a younger crowd.

Just as long as they don't use the fonts from Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, it may be fine. Hopefully someone will take pictures one day so that we don't have to wait for September 21.

I've seen teasers, but none with any numbers lit up.

Well, G-R.net says the showcase podiums DID switch to computer screens (as during a test, a Windows desktop was shown and a mouse was scrolling across the screen). Also, they shortened the opening (they got rid of the "Television's most exciting hour of fantastic prizes" line). Everything else, including the contestants row displays, remained the same with the exceptions of some minor changes (new art displays, the position of the big wheel). However, they did shorten the recording time, which means less time for rather "long" pricing games (like 3 Strikes), plus if they do do a long game, they'll have to play a lot of quick games to make up for lost time.

All in all, doesn't seem like a whole lot has changed, which is good. Here's the thread:

I just read that Today. They just don't say what font was used, or show any pictures...

Also from that article, sounds like the red display didn't want to work a few times...
