QZT: creator of the wayside horn

Talk about crossing signal companies here. International companies are okay too.

QZT: creator of the wayside horn

Post by NSsignal » Thu Mar 16, 2023 8:05 am

So the wayside horn. Disliked by many. Its a good conversation starter but how it sounds… not as much.
Created by QZT: quiet zone technologies and only sold by QZT.
Anyway there are six types of wayside horns I’ve found.

The best mimics the K5LA pretty well. Though it’s quite rare.
The typical which mimics an RS3L pretty badly. The most common.
The slightly lower version does the same. Not very common.
The first version which came out in the 2000 has a far more clear sound than the typical one. Very rare.

The worst is the high pitched one. NS used plenty of these. Common in the south.
There is also the steam whistle version which unfortunately the only known one has been replaced. It mimics a Santa Fe steamer. Don’t remember which locomotive.

Even though these are disliked they are also an interesting piece of equipment that was pretty much a fancy looking loud speaker that most of the time played bad mimics of locomotive horns.

Locations where you can find anyone of these.
K5LA model: pent highway crossing, Wallingford, CT(replaced)

The typical RS3L model: DeKalb IL 7th st grade crossing
The slightly lower version you can find at the First St crossing in DeKalb IL.

The old version can be found at the Yosemite St crossing in Roseville, CA.

The high pitched wayside horn can be found in Spring Field Ohio. All crossings on the NS have it in that town.

The steam one used to be in San Clemente CA

The first wayside horns were tested in CA

Check out my Roblox group called Railroad Town Replicators. We have games based in real world towns and we primary make signals. And no I’m not asking for R$ or likes. The one who is too interested in railroad crossing signals but you can’t be too intrested.
