Crossing Maps

Post by AndyWS » Sat Dec 15, 2012 9:22 pm

This is something I always thought it would be nice for the site to have. It would show where the crossings are in relation to each other, how the crossings and surrounding areas have changed between the time of the photos and the Street View/Satellite images, and any crossings in the area not on the site.

Here's an example one I created for Madison, WI (I hope to eventually add all crossings in south-central Wisconsin to it, and create more maps for other regions):

https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=20 ... 4,0.528374

Clicking on any one of the place markers at each crossing brings up a link to the rxrsignals.net page for the crossing. Alternatively, you can click on the crossing name in the alphabetical menu to the left and it will show you where it is.

Nice. I've been doing something similar, except I'm mapping out locations of bell types in Google Earth, using both rxrsignals and Google Street View for reference. I also color code each bell for easier finding. I'd share it, but trying to find and then sharing the kml files for Google Earth is a pain in the butt.

I've done about the same thing with the crossings I'm planning to get in southeastern Louisiana and southern Mississippi.
I have it listed on Google Earth.

I got them separated by the amount of train traffic and by what type of crossing (passive, gated/gateless mast, gated/gateless Cantilever).

I made one myself. It just lists the brand of lights/type, the bell type (Safetran Type 3, WCH mechanical, etc.), the gate mechanism manufacturer, and who owns the crossing.

That's cool that some of you guys had this idea, too. I've finished my map for south-central Wisconsin including Madison and its surroundings. I'll eventually start working on more for other parts of the state. Now they just need to eventually be integrated into the site so that visitors can browse crossings by the map.

I took a few minutes and threw something together. Let me know what you think.

This hasn't been linked to any of the other pages yet as it is only a test page.

Have to agree... that's pretty awesome. I was supposed to be driving through Madison on Thursday... however with the pending snowstorm and blizzard that is forecast, think I might stay further east and come through Milwaukee instead.

Cool, although there should be a rain/snow mix here so be careful anyway.

What brings you up Badgerland way?
