List of remaining M-Bells in Urban Melbourne

Post by TrickyMario7654 » Wed Nov 16, 2016 4:28 am

I thought I would post this list in a separate thread now as I've edited the post I made in another thread more than ten times now! Anyways, this list contains all level/railroad crossings in Metro Melbourne (includes Stony Point Line) which are still known to have mechanical bells (list records only crossings which had them on January 1st, 2016). Please note that some of them may have been replaced already, so don't take this list as a 100% official thread.

I've sorted the list out by the group it's on, what line it's on, and the distance from Flinders Street station in Melbourne.

You may notice some have 'slated for removal' next to the road name. This indicates that this crossing is one of the 50 to be removed by the Andrews Government. 'Tramsquare' means that trams cross at grade with train tracks.

COLOR KEY:
Crossings in red indicates crossing has been grade separated.
Crossings in blue indicates bell has been replaced with an E-Bell.
Crossings in green indicates that I'm unsure if it's still there.

CAULFIELD GROUP

Sandringham Line
  • Union Street, Windsor (Westinghouse Hybrid & Safetran Mechanical bell, replaced August 2016)
  • Glen Eira Road, Ripponlea (Westinghouse Hybrid & Safetran Mechanical bell, replaced August 2016)
  • Hampton Street, Hampton (Westinghouse Hybrid x2, replaced August 2016)
Sadly, the last remaining mechanical bells on the line were replaced by August 2016.

Frankston Line
  • North Road, Ormond (Westinghouse Hybrid x2, grade separated June-July 2016)
  • Centre Road, Bentleigh (Westinghouse Hybrid x2, grade separated June-July 2016)
  • Eel Race Road, Carrum (Westinghouse Hybrid x2, slated for removal for some reason)
  • Armstrongs Road, Seaford (Westinghouse Hybrid x2, replaced January 2016)
  • Seaford Road, Seaford (Westinghouse Hybrid x2, slated for removal, replaced January 2016)

  • Clayton Road, Clayton (Westinghouse Hybrid x2, slated for removal)
  • Centre Road, Clayton (Westinghouse Hybrid x2, slated for removal)
  • Corrigan Road, Noble Park (Westinghouse Hybrid x2, slated for removal, oddly replaced April 2017. There's was also a disused teardrop bell at this crossing before it's removal)

Willamstown Line
Both crossings have E-Bells (One from General Signals, the other from Barker Technics)

Sunbury Line
  • Main Road, St Albans (Westinghouse Hybrid x2, grade separated October 2016)

Only one crossing on this segment (Ramsden Street) and it has Baker Technics E-Bells.

  • Main Hurstbridge Road, Diamond Creek (Westinghouse Hybrid x2)
BURNLEY GROUP

Belgrave and Lilydale Lines (Between Camberwell and Ringwood)
100% E-Bells. All of which are from General Signals, with the exception of Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert (which has Barker Technics E-Bells), Blackburn Road, Blackburn was the last crossing with mechanical bells (Westinghouse Hybrid & McK&H Teardrop bell), which were replaced with E-Bells in mid-2014. (Even then, the crossing was later removed by Daniel Andrews). Additionally, Rooks Road, Mitchan (Westinghouse Hybrid x2) and Mitcham Road, Mictham (Westinghouse Hybrid & Safetran Mechanical Bell) were removed earlier that year.

Glen Waverley Line
  • Glenferrie Road, Kooyong (Westinghouse Hybrid x2, tramsquare)
  • Toorak Road, Kooyong (Westinghouse Hybrid x2, slated for removal. Hybrid's sound horrible at this crossing.)
  • Burke Road, Glen Iris (Westinghouse Hybrid x3, tramsquare, grade separated January 2016)
Alamein Line
Both crossings have E-Bells. Prospect Hill Road uses General Signals' ones, while Riversdale Road uses Barker Technics E-Bells. The latter is also a tramsquare.

I've recently been to Camms Rd in Cranbourne, and yes I can confirm that this crossing still has Westinghouse Hybrid's!

Corrigan Road, Noble Park (Westinghouse Hybrid x2, slated for removal, oddly replaced April 2017. There's also a disused teardrop bell at this crossing)
Great way for Metro to waste money replacing Westinghouse Hybrids with General Signals Type 3 E-Bells while they are in the middle of a grade seperation. I can also think the disused teardrop bell is obviously McKenzie & Holland. :Tongue2:

One stupid thing is that they replace all lights bells and so on about 4 months before removing and destoying it anyways! Such a waste of money! :Curse1:

Centre Road, Clayton Road and Skye/Overton Road need to be added to list of crossings that have been grade separated. This takes 6 Hybrid bells off of the suburban network.

Also just adding the dead hybrid bell is still at Eel Race Road Seaford, which means there’s only one functioning hybrid bell on the entire Frankston line...
Metro, why are you so bad at maintaining your railway crossings??

These crossings have either had their bells replaced or the crossing removed
1. Eel Race Road replaced June 2018
2. Skye Road/Overton Road removed June 2018
3. All the crossings on the Cranbourne & Pakenham line (Caulfield & Dandenong) have been removed
4. Kororoit Creek Road has been removed
5. Buckley Street has been removed
6. Seaford Road has been removed
