These types of lights have started popping up since the late 1980s, and seemed to be very popular over the eastern and central U.S, then spread West during the late 1980s, and especially into the 1990s.

 

For a brief moment in late summer, 2001, I thought for a moment that these were 8". The black backgrounds are 24" wide, which sort of clarified the 10" stereotype until 2003 for this site. These lights are indeed 12", but the backgrounds are an extra 4" wide than above.

 

I don't know why these 24" backgrounds were made, but I don't really like them. I like the 20" backgrounds better.
