The reason why the second crossbuck is located so far back was that the tack currently used by the EARY was the connecting track between the ACL (later SCL) line between Atlanta, GA and Birmingham, AL and the L&N Mineral Loop.
The L&N Mineral Loop continued northeast from this crossing (while the EARY currently turns north towards the CSX Lineville Sub just after the crossing, as seen in the track views) and headed to what's now the Greater Talladega and Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce inside of an old L&N Depot.
After that, the L&N Mineral Loop ran northeast between Coffee Street and Battle Street before meandering its way to Anniston, AL and then heading north towards Gadsden, AL. The EARY line to the south of this crossing is also part of the L&N Mineral Loop.
The L&N Mineral Loop ultimately ran all the way from Calera, AL to Birmingham, AL, via Sylacauga and Oneonta, AL in addition to Talladega and the other towns mentioned above.
Various parts of the line were abandoned over the years due to declining traffic along the line. Much of the trackage from the line that's left in service is now under the ownership of various shortlines, though CSX does retain a a section of a line (now a branch line) that runs northeast out of Birmingham.
