Re: An older signal still doing it's job

Now adays they just wait till you screw up and fire you.
and I'm not a gandy dancer so I have no clue what tools you guys called roadmaster.
Yeah, it dawned on me later that I was in an unusual situation. As
a signal maintainer I had to be there every time they took a rail out
(+ frog, point ...

Re: An older signal still doing it's job

On the SP there was three different things called "Roadmaster".
Can anyone name 'em? LOL :)

Donkey
Grass snake
ASShole
How is a "wrong answer buzzer sound" spelled? ;)

No, but really, I got along real well with all the Roadmasters and Gandy Dancers (Traqueros),

Re: An older signal still doing it's job

On the SP we called a setup like that "crossing bells".

What in the world kind of sense does that make?
There aren't even any bells there.
LOL :)

We didn't call ourselves "dumb railroaders" for nothin' you know.

All ours had bells on them. It wasn't a technical term meant for
everybody ...

Re: Fiberglass Vs Aluminum Gates?

I can't believe there are maintainers that still screw wire clips to the gate arms.
Back-when, that was the Standard and doing it any-other-way was not Standard. LOL :)
I have no idea what the railroads want now days but somehow I figure it -don't-
include holding the gate light cables on with ...

Re: What kind of light bulb do 4 inch gate lights use?

Im looking for a bulb for my gate light but I dont know which kind railroads use.
Does anybody know what type of bulb goes in 4 inch gate lights? Thanks.
The old SP used GE 10v 25 watt bulbs for everything except the semiphore
signals, those needed 8 volt bulbs that had two connections on the ...

Re: 4 gate lights...

I actually agree and prefer crossings where the bells shut off after the gates lower
(obviously I'm in a bit of minority though.)
Anyhow... I understand the concept of the crossing being "closed" when the gates
are down. But what about a crossing with just lights and bells only?
Why does the ...

Re: Must be lightly used

Here is exactly what a US&S AFO is:

...(modern) inductive loop track circuit...

I need to look through my old books and see if I can find a book on the old AFOs for
us, it'd be cool to turn it into a PDF but I'll have to learn how to ...

Re: Must be lightly used

Also, an "AFTAC" is not an AC/DC track circuit, it is an "Audio Frequency Train
Activated Circuit" system, much like an AFO. You may be thinking of an SCX-1,
which is an AC/DC system that combines 2 approaches and an island into an
integrated control unit.
Just factual FYI.
Cool. :)

I told ...

Pretty obvious paper wasp nests...
You can see a dead one on the lens. {I can't tell it's a wasp;}
Looks like a series of "generations" started nests one on top of the other...
normally those wasps' nests only have one layer.
Cool. :)

I was born here in Arizona so I sure as heck wouldn't know ...

Re: Ahh Shat....

I bet one of the side windows is missing. :)
And been missing for a long time too. LOL :)

Man I'll tell you what, none of my signals would've ever got like that!

For some reason it looks more like honey bees to me but a bird first.
