Re: Google Maps Scavenger Hunt

This is an unusual set-up:

Unique crossbuck install

I don't even know where to start with this one.

Would it be read as RAILROAD YIELD CROSSING?

I mean, someone had to go out of their way to angle both blades correctly. Good job, BNSF

Re: Retractable gate

It was Wisconsin and Southern that had the four sets of barrier gates on their system. Wisconsin Central was already absorbed into CN by that time.

I didn't know winter weather was a problem with them. But yeah, I have seen other crossings around the Madison area with gates just not set up to ...

Re: Retractable gate

Huh. I'm surprised to see an RR use that in Wisconsin, given the troubles ice and snow have had on various crossing signal equipment.
Depending on the construction or activation mechanism, somehow I could see ice, snow, and cold combining to either cause the gate not to extend on lowering, or worse ...

One signal wonder?

I can kind of understand why there's only one gate at this crossing, but why not at least one or two mast signals with lights only for the opposite approach?

Yellow and red striped gates?

Quad gate setup with the exit gates being yellow with red stripes, while entrance gates are normal. (And every gate here is also upside down! LOL)

Crossing with gates always down

This is my first time seeing a setup like this in the US. Where the gates are always down at the crossing, and you have to stop at the designated spot and wait for the gates to go up before crossing. (also note bell mounted on relay case)

Re: Gilbert Ferry Road (AL 77), Attalla, AL

I'm surprised East coast railroads even worry about shutting off the electronic bells on gate down. While I can understand trying to minimize wear on a mechanical bell, e-bells should be cheap throwaways. Heck, since we're generally just dealing with PCBs, chips, caps, and resisters... it feels as ...

Re: Del Ray Beach Florida

Strange that the crossbucks are mounted on the backside of the signals and not the front. Double sided perhaps, but the text is obscured in the proper approach lanes on the right, and not the left being mounted that way. I guess it could have been intentional though, seeing it was set up most likely ...

Show me the (rail) way

Don't see "RAILWAY" crossbucks too often in Canada anymore, and even more rare to see yet in the US. But here is a set of two crossbucks in Minnesota!
