Re: New WES Crossings in Beaverton
My guess... and it's just a guess... is that the gates are rather close to the "cantilever" signals, and the gates are rather long. Maybe they wanted the wind guard up higher like that to keep the gates from blowing into the other signal??

Re: Photo Of The Month: February
This is on North Grand Ave in Springfield, IL, and was taken in 2003. There are 9 signals in this picture total, although one is hidden by a telephone pole. (The telephone pole on the left side... you can BARELY make out the gate for that signal behind the pole). The 1st gated signal on the right (m...

Re: Amtrak vs. Garbage truck
You have a good memory! I don't remember reading about this one: http://www.sj-r.com/archive/x1452591344/Amtrak-hits-semi-near-Auburn-minor-injuries-reported That would make 3 Amtrak trains involved in collisions between Springfield and St Louis in the last 4 months. Re: Gas Prices
$1.99 as of Friday here in Springfield. Thanks to state taxes, our prices almost always seem higher than the norm.

Amtrak vs. Garbage truck
About 2 weeks ago, a garbage truck driver ignored the flashing lights and bells and not only messed his day up, but also messed up about 40 other people's day that was on the train: http://www.sj-r.com/archive/x743986236/Amtrak-train-crashes-into-truck-near-Carlinville This is actually the 2nd Amtra...

Re: Locations Of ACTIVE US&S TEARDROPS
If you move closer to the crossing (you have to pick up the little Google guy and move him manually)... it looks like there is a telephone pole on the side closest to the traffic signals. That would be my guess as to the odd way the lights are mounted.
