Australian Railroad Crossing Signals

I can report that during February 2023 the crossing at Angas Rd, Hawthorn was upgraded with new UGL LED lights and the Lex-C lights are no more. Google actually managed to capture the old lights during their final month of service in January 2023. That's a shame. Guess this means there's only one pair of Lex-C lights left in Australia, or am I forgetting some more?

There were some Lex-C lights in Queensland on a few of the sugar mill railways but not sure how many are left, this is one example which still existed last year

Interesting! I wonder how widespread they used to be in Australia, given that it's known that they used to be used in Victoria, South Australia, and Queensland.

Just noticed that this crossing on the disused Mount Gambier line in Penola, SA still has its signals intact as of December last year!

A closer look at the signals from 2010. I assume the nearby Penola Bypass cutting the road in half is part of the reason why these signals have survived to this day, as the pretty much non-existent traffic doesn’t justify the hassle of removing them.

Some nice finds there, seems the crossings on the SA part of the line have done a little better than the VIC ones which are all gone.

On the other hand, it appears that Victoria’s “Big Build” might be running into some financial troubles from what I’ve heard. Perhaps some of the level crossings removals may need to be dropped from the pipeline?

Found something pretty unfortunate about the Sisely Avenue crossing in Wangaratta. The remaining hybrid bell and Westinghouse EB gate mechanism has been replaced with a Siemens e-bell and a WCH gate mech.

Additionally, the crossing has also gotten those hideous red background crossbucks and newer “2 Tracks” signs.

If there’s one positive thing to say, the pedestrian boom barriers have still remained. It’s safe to say the proposed upgrade to the pedestrian crossing has been abandoned.

On the last day of my holiday in Mildura before we drive back right now. I want to report that this signal at Karadoc Avenue has been replaced entirely.

The new signal contains the usual equipment seen at new installations, including a red background crossbuck. I assume the previous signal was involved in a vehicle strike and it needed to be replaced. Otherwise, the rest of the crossings in Mildura and nearby Irymple are unchanged (the hybrid bell shown in the 2015 images of Irymple Ave has obviously been replaced, before you ask).

Mildura seems to be stuck in a time capsule when it comes to what is protecting their level crossings. Despite being a major regional city, there’s only three gated crossings across the whole area, those being the Calder Highway, Cowra Avenue, and the Benetook Avenue & 11th Street crossings. Obviously the fact that there’s been no regular passenger trains since 1993 is likely why there’s so few gated crossings in Mildura, though it still feels so weird to see so many gateless crossings in such a large regional city!

Yes, Yahl Road still has signals present. I noticed most crossings on the rail trail section in Mt Gambier had signals removed, hopefully the ones remaining stay a bit longer.

On a separate note, I don't know if its been said here yet but I visited all Gawler line crossings last week and every single one of them has LED lights now, mostly UGL LEDs apart from Womma Road Womma with Westinghouse LEDs, Commercial Road Nurlutta with WCH LEDs, Kings Road Parafield with WCH LEDs, and Pym Street Dudley Park with WCH lights with Westinghouse? LED inserts.
