Baidu Maps Scavenger Hunt

Post by MapsSurfer » Fri Nov 16, 2018 9:28 pm

Baidu (China's version of Google) has their own Street View service just like Google. As with Google's Street View we can use Baidu to find and document Chinese Railroad Crossings and Signals. The website is a bit fidgety, but is good once you get that hang of it. Here is the link: https://map.baidu.com/#
Tips:

To access street view you must click the picture on the Bottom-Right Corner.

For other map options, you must hover over (not click on) the photo in the bottom-right corner, three options should be available. The first will allow you to access street view, the second will switch the map to satellite view (In this mode street view is not allowed for some reason) and the final is unknown exactly what it does.

Street View is restricted to China and Chinese Territory Only.

Railroad Lines are marked with Black & White Lines, similar to other map sites.

The Following are a few examples that can be found on the site.

I use both Baidu Maps and Tencent Maps for Chinese Street View. Tencent is also pretty easy to use, but some tweaking around is required to learn the ropes.

For my first hunt, I searched around Shenzhen, China. Crossings are rather rare down there since Shenzhen is a highly modern city, (It's also just across the border from Hong Kong another extremely modern city). I managed to find a couple interesting ones so here we go.

This Crossing consist of a set of standard Chinese Flashers, Warning Signs including Stop Signs and some custom Automatic Gates.

This Signal even has a crooked Crossbuck!

This Crossing in a different city has another set of Standard Flasher with Two Wooden (possibly Bamboo) Hand-Operated Gates.

Finally, here is a rather Large, Double-Track Crossing somewhere Southwest of Shanghai. Note the Quadrant of Rollable gates.

Note for those who may have trouble with the links:
After clicking the link, the website will require you to use Adobe Flash Player to view Street View. To enable this just click on the Blue-Highlighted Characters. For a clearer view of the window, you'll have to remove the pull-out tabs that appear on the sides. You can also enable full-screen by clicking the button on the top-right corner of the site's window. Finally, there is a rather hard to see clock on the top-left corner of the screen, this will allow you to see views taken on earlier dates.

I've been snooping around China for some interesting locations and I was able to find quite a lot in the city of Kunming.
Some of these Crossings are located along the China-Vietnam Railway which runs on Vietnamese Track-Gauge.

To start, here is a rather large Crossing at what looks like a newly Paved Avenue.

Another enormous Crossing.

Here is a row of crossings along an industrial spur. These Gate Mechanisms seem to be of the same type as the ones above.

Here is another nearby.

Back to the Mainline, this Passive Crossing has a pretty low clearance post!

Not a crossing, but this is cool scene.

Here is a Crossing closer to the heart of the City.
https://map.baidu.com/#panoid=090257000 ... 851575519T

Looks like the Chinese have copied those Gate Mechanisms made in Japan!
https://map.baidu.com/#panoid=090257000 ... 851575519T

Another Crossing down the same line.

I'm definitely gonna revisit Kunming to add more Crossings to the list, trust me there are a lot more!

I found a rare 2-light chinese crossing, it has no white light!
