Old Chattanooga Pike #2, South Cleveland, TN
*originally recorded on 10-26-24*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights and a General Signals Type 3 electronic bell.
On October 26th, I went out to shoot some crossings in SE Tennessee/NW Georgia to the east of Chattanooga. This was the first crossing I went to, which is up on the NS Knoxville West End District. I was hoping it still had a mechanical bell but, as you can see, it was replaced by the time I got here. As such, I was just gonna document it and head on elsewhere when I heard a train horn to my east, so I quickly got set-up and started recording. Less than two minutes later, the crossing activated and I was able to get my first train of the day: a southbound intermodal train with an ES44AC leading a Dash-9 for power.
This crossing is a pretty nice one, featuring a gateless 1980s NS install that's fairly original. In fact, up until sometime within the past few months (per Elliot), this crossing was still entirely original, though, sadly, earlier this year, NS replaced the original Safetran mechanical bell here with the current GS Type 3 e-bell. Thankfully, nothing else appears to have changed to this crossing, which is nice to see. Hopefully these old gateless signals remain in use for many more years to come, but, either way, at least I was able to get them recorded.
