Wheeler Dam Road, Cohutta, GA
*originally recorded on 10-26-24*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, a Safetran Type 3 electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, RECO LED gate lights, and a RECO gate light.
Signal on the right: 3 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, a Safetran gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
After catching the southbound intermodal train in South Cleveland, TN, I hopped on down to Cohutta, GA, to start shooting the NS Atlanta North District (and technically part of the Chattanooga Terminal as well). I got set-up at this crossing and, after over half an hour of waiting, I was able to get my second train of the day: a northbound intermodal with an AC44C6M leading an SD70ACe for power.
This crossing is a pretty decent one, and, at first glance, may actually appear to be a mid to late-2000s NS install. However, the signals seem to be a bit older than that, as they appear to have been installed in the late-90s or very early-2000s, just with the bell having been replaced at some point. That being said, it seems these signals replaced something older, as the relay case here appears to be one from the late-SOU, though I have no idea what would've originally been here. The bell here is still set to ring when the gates rise, however, which is always nice to see. The closer signal also has an extra pair of lights on it for some reason, which does look a bit unusual.
