Makes sense, there's that dirt driveway, the gate has to be behind that to prevent someone from exiting the driveway and getting whacked by a train.

I dunno... it would be tight. They probably played it safe putting the cantilever where it was... to keep it from getting whacked by someone coming down that driveway not paying attention.

Reminds me of this crossing just a few blocks from where I work. It is like this on both sides of the crossing due to the alley's on each side.

That's certainly different. Has it always been one track through there, or were there originally more and the area was just converted to drive space?

There may have been more tracks eeons ago... but not in my time. Back in the 70's, the crossing used to have cantilevers only, and they were installed where the gate masts are now, right next to the track. When the RR decided to upgrade the crossing in the mid 80's and add the gates, this is what they decided to do.

That's when the intermodal and merger boom was really hitting its stride. The RR may have thought leaving room for a passing siding or others was prudent.
