Why incandescents rule

Post by AndyWS »

This shot just wouldn't look the same with LEDs:

Taken at daybreak on January 4, 2011 at this crossing:

I think it has to be the only public crossing left on the CN's Waukesha Subdivision mainline with incandescent lights.

I've always wondered how that crossing escapes from having LED's put in. I've actually seen those signals from over 10 years ago before they got gates. I got the old Hi8 tapes somewhere.

Judging by photos on the 102 page, the dialight LEDs would come pretty close to looking like that. Nice pic though.

To be honest, I don't mind it either way. However, I got this crossing all to myself when it malfunctioned and the maintainer was a long ways away. The Union Pacific LEDs just seems weird in the shot, but still work:

Incandescents are hard to find in my area because Union Pacific keeps on replacing them.

Arizona still has a ton of incandescents left on the Phoenix line. At least 10 crossings out of 13 with incandescents from Morristown to Williams, AZ.

CSX down here is too cheap to buy L.E.D.s but the PD sub has a few ball L.E.D.s along with the shortline A&GR they mainly use RSI although all Ive seen lately go up is wch.
UP on the other hand is replacing incandescents left and right along with the old m-bells.

I don't know exactly. A crossing close to me now has one pair of WCH Clears, rear lights of the masts are Harmon Fading(hate that type  ), and the cantilevers have Union Pacific LEDs.
