Re: Tallest mast signal?
If you look at the user images, one of the photos shows the crossing in action.
I guess it is a good thing that that crossing is only used publicly during the fair.

This signal appears to be only decorative in nature. I highly doubt that it is functional.

If you go to the "Images" button in the top right corner of street view, on the lower left picture shows the crossing in action.Brian556 wrote:This signal appears to be only decorative in nature. I highly doubt that it is functional.

I don't think it is being used as an actual crossing signal though... more for display purposes only.
Re: Tallest mast signal?
Cabman speaks the truth. The signal is operable, but it is not being used as an actual crossing signal. It's a display piece at the railroad museum at the State Fair of Texas. The 8" lights on this signal do work... they turn it on sometimes when the museum is open. I don't know whether or not the teardrop bell works, though, it has not been ringing the few times I've seen the lights on. Strangely, the absurd height of this signal serves somewhat of a purpose... it makes the flashing lights visible above the old steam loco parked in front of it as you walk towards the entrance of the museum (the entrance is to the left from that streetview photo).cabman701 wrote:I don't think it is being used as an actual crossing signal though... more for display purposes only.
Speaking of tall mast signals (though not as tall as that one), look at the one below. Consider this a preview, since I will not be submitting this crossing for another couple of weeks. IMO this is unnecessarily tall... it's just about the same height as the cantilever signal it replaced. The crossbuck looks silly at the top of that tall pole, so far above the lights.

I can beat that. Right by my Grandmother's house too.

Looks like the gate mechanisms can hardly stand the gates. They aren't even near the wind guards. Kinda beats the purpose of the tall mast. Imagine if the shortline wanted a new bell? Too bad they won't. Hardly any of their crossings even have bells, or gates! This is the most signaled crossing on the entire line.
Expect that from me when I visit her during spring break.
Cheers,
Joshua

I don't understand why they put the tall masts in with wind gaurds when the gates do not go up all the way like the one above. I have seen that quite a bit, total waste of time and money.

Personally, I think they justed wanted to p**s the maintainer off when the bells broke.
