In Northern Illinois... quad gates started showing up along the UP line between Chicago and St. Louis back in the early 2000's. I think I saw the first set along I-55 around 2001. This was for the high speed Amtrak train project. That line happens to be the old routing of the old NS mainline through Lafayette. This stretch of track is now used as a lead and terminates just a bit farther down.
