There really wasn't an explanation other than the cars "broke loose". They had been sitting for quite some time, so if I had to guess someone was being mischievous, released the hand brakes and gravity took over.

Came across this... believe it or not... watching a show on DIY network last night. These signals where in a shot coming out of a commercial. I had to do some Google searching to find them, but was able to use the True Value store in the background to figure out where this was.

We start out in Richmond, Maine:

IIRC, that line is owned by the State of Maine and doesn't see any trains (of course), but there sure is a lot of classic GRS equipment along the line! Crossingman18 knows more about the line than I do though.

Holy crap! Nice find! That line has some really rare stuff! I'd love to head up there and get the photos of those crossings (Before anyone else does!

), Northern New England is also one of my favorite parts of the country so that wouldn't be impossible soon.

Take a look at this gem I saw on-line over the weekend. The signal itself dates back to the 1930's according to the comments, although it appears the lights are newer. Sadly it is just on display now basically.

Looks like the original cantilever arm was hit at one point and the railroad that owned the signal (Conrail?) just shop-brewed a replacement arm rather than replacing the whole signal.

Yeah... I was thinking the arm (and obviously the lights) looked newer, but I thought maybe they painted the arm the last time the lights were replaced. It doesn't surprise me that it was hit at some point.

Would love to see how it looked originally and if it had a buddy on the other side.
