Yesterday, I traveled to Castlemaine and found that the Maclise St crossing on the Victorian Goldfields Railway (with a teardrop bell) has been upgraded with LED lights. However, the additional lamps facing the side roads are still incandescent:

I checked the abandoned Moscript St crossing as well and some equipment still remains:

I also visited Maldon station and was surprised to find a pair of Safetran Gate Mechs, new "red background" crossbuck signs, new style Westinghouse LED lights, a Safetran Type 3 E-Bell and a new relay cabinet lying in the station yards. Unfortunately, I couldn't get an images of them as there were a lot of workmen in the area at the time. Could the VGR soon be upgrading one of their crossings with gates?
I wonder why they did that partial LED upgrade to Maclise Street? Presumably they did it because either the old incandescent lamps burned out or it's a safety thing and the side lights aren't really a priority because they face dead-end residential streets. It's a shame because otherwise the crossing was completely original. At least the cast-iron Teardrop bell remains.

As for the new equipment, I presume it may be for this crossing as it's located nearby and seems like a busy road at times.

Take a look at these images that popped up on Daniel Andrews' Facebook page (the cringiest place on the internet LOL), saying that these things weren't even invented when Murrumbeena Road was last level crossing free.

Tell you what, Daniel Andrews is lying. According to Wikipedia, the station there opened on May 14, 1879, so only one of the things listed there (won't be spoiling it) had been invented when Murrumbeena Road was last level crossing free (presuming that the crossing existed when the station opened). Just goes to show that politicians aren't always correct, especially if they have giant ears and glasses!

It’s pretty bad when you get the dates wrong of the thing your bragging about! (That’s Daniel Andrews lol) You certainly don’t like him :LOL2:

Well I don’t like being the bearer of bad news but the crossing at Blayney has received new signals :aaargh: That means goodbye to the Federal Signals gate mechs and a hybrid bell :Awww: The new signals can be seen at 5:53 of this video.

At least the historic electric locomotives 8606 and 4615 should be returning to service :TUP2:

Wouldn't be surprised if the crossing was upgraded as it only had one bell...
They/Them for me, please.

God damn Nazi Holland strikes again, replacing working crossing signals because they're "life expired". :Curse1:

I wonder if Ash Street, Orange and Rydal were upgraded too?

Having one bell was likely a contributing factor although I do know of a 2015 installation that only has one bell. The gate mechs age was likely a factor as well.

Yes Nazi Holland strikes again! This years strategy report will likely say they were life expired even though they weren’t. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ash St and Rydal have bitten the dust knowing Nazi Holland :Curse1:

That really sucks, now we're down to only one pair of Federal Signal mechs. We can only hope that the hybrid bell is reused, as it looked quite new.

I think maybe the signals were replaced during recent upgrades to the signalling and interlocking at Blayney.

Wouldn’t be surprised if it was done during the signalling upgrade. I do hope they reuse the hybrid although I won’t hold my breath. Certainly sucks we’ve lost more rare equipment. There’s actually another pair of Federal Signals gate mechs left. The second is at Army Camp Rd, Singleton. I am pretty sure the signals were installed in the mid 1970s when the line opened. Here’s a few pictures of the crossing back in 2008 taken by my Dad.

The Westinghouse incandescents have been replaced with United Group lights. The WRRS m-bells have been replaced with Safetran type 3s. The wishbone gates have been replaced by normal ones :Awww: Thankfully the Federal Signals gate mechs remain!
