Sorry if this has been posted before, but check out this unusual cantilever setup at William St in Beckenham, Western Australia using Safetran 12 inch lights:

https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-32.022 ... 312!8i6656

https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-32.022 ... 312!8i6656

What's even more unusual is that the lights on one side are incandescent, while the other are LEDs:

WA seem to be replacing their crossbucks with the new 'red background' signs very quickly. This crossing received them sometime between June and October this year:

Here's a video (by STW TranVids) of the crossing operating:

Hey, sorry for the double post but I just discovered some old hand gates still in use in NSW!

https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-34.204 ... 312!8i6656

The crossing even has an old style advance warning sign with a hazard triangle:

You can see the gates in action at 3:56 in this video:

Those hand gates do look nice but it's a shame they used red background crossbucks as they totally ruin the heritage look of the crossing in my opinion :Awww:

The gates aren't actually original and have been installed more recently, this was previously a normal passive crossing for many years as seen in this 2009 image.

Post by Jack2003 »

I'm amazed that the crossing used to be passive that the gates are not original. The red background railway crossing signs are out of place at the crossing and should be replaced by normal crossbucks. Anyway I happen to have something to share with you all. Earlier I rang Puffing Billy to report about the flat level crossing bells at Long Pockitt Lane, Selby Aura Road, Selby, the crossing going into Lakeside Station and Main Street, Gembrook. The person said that the bells are deliberately modified to sound the way they do now due to nearby housing, he said also that they put rubber in them so they don't sound too loud at those crossings. I also called him again just before to tell him about the School Road level crossing at Menzies Creek (west of Menzies Creek station) of how the teardrop bell sounds very fast and how it could do with some TLC and about the one east of Menzies Creek station of how it clicks. Unfortunately now I have some really sad news to report and that is 3 more crossings on Puffing Billy at School Road, Menzies Creek (west of Menzies Creek station), I think it might be Beaconsfield - Emerald Road, I'm not sure and Pakenham Road, Cockatoo are getting boom gates. :Awww: :aaargh: :Censored: :Curse1:  However he told me that they will use Western Cullen Hayes mechanical bells on these new installations like they did with Old Monbulk Road, Belgrave, Edenmont Road, Clematis and Pinnocks Road, Emerald thankfully. :Okay: It is still very upsetting that these classic crossings will be ruined and that will take 3 teardrop bells out of Victoria taking the amount down to 25 and add in 3 more Western Cullen Hayes mechanical bells making the amount 12 in Victoria. This also means that there'll be 7 crossings on Puffing Billy with teardrop bells. Here is the link to the crossing upgrades. The crossing upgrades are on page 5: https://puffingbilly.com.au/wp-content/ ... _Apr19.pdf Unfortunately more sad news and that is Minton Street, Beverage now has boom gates, so it's RIP to the hybrid bell. :aaargh: :Awww: :Censored: :Curse1:  A worthless crossing upgrade as it was a quiet road and I don't think there were any accidents there. I found out from Rob Wales that he went there a month or two ago and the crossing was still gateless and new signal bases had been installed, so upsetting.

COLOR KEYS
Crossings in red indicates crossing has been grade separated.

•Keon Parade, Reservoir (Westinghouse Hybrid x3, the middle one doesn't sound. The other one in the middle was oddly replaced mid this year with a ebell which doesn't work. The hybrid bell had been knocked off the signal after a truck crashed into it after getting hit by a train)

Nice job with those lists! It's sad to hear that Puffing Billy will be loosing more gateless crossings and Teardrop bells, but at least they're still using mechanical bells. I wonder why Puffing Billy gets a pass when it comes to using mechanical bells and old equipment while all other heritage railways in the state get the same stock standard modern day installations as ARTC and V/Line? I bet Healesville-Kinglake Rd on the Yarra Valley Railway won't receive new M-Bells when it gets upgraded.

Re: Australian Railroad Crossing Signals

Very sad to hear about more rare equipment being lost and more upgrades though at least Puffing Billy should be using WCH m-bells.

Changing the topic now, made a visit to Western Australia recently and was able to photograph a few crossings. I wasn’t able to stop too much but still got to photograph a few.

The first was at the Vasse Hwy, Pemberton: https://goo.gl/maps/fcibq4KXmHdPRU3U8 along the Pemberton tourist tramway and unfortunately the gate-less signals with teardrop bells have been replaced with gated signals. However the new setup is rather interesting with both signals having WCH m-bells, Alstom lights (within rectangular backgrounds like most WA crossings), unmarked junction boxes (most WA crossings have these) and Westinghouse/McKenzie & Holland gate mechs. One signal has a Westinghouse base whilst the other has a McK&H one.

The other crossing on the Vasse Hwy, Pemberton (currently out of service) still retains it’s McK&H and Westinghouse teardrop bells and remains unchanged from the GSV image: https://goo.gl/maps/5yuQXJMy2SE75JgH6

This crossing further up the road at Collins is also unchanged: https://goo.gl/maps/RWmzavgdShKhM4ye9

The next was York St, Albany and is also unchanged and still retains two WCH m-bells, gate mechs, bases and United Group lights: https://goo.gl/maps/x99o7isWTsVZTFeVA

Residency Rd, Albany: https://goo.gl/maps/fc4xDFNDE5CnjQ1y5 is a good example of a typical setup from around 2010 onwards and consists of Westinghouse clear LEDs, Safetran Type 3 e-bells, Safetran gate mechs and bases. I believe Western Australia is the only state in the country where Safetran bases are installed.

N Lake Grace- Karlgarin Rd, North Lake Grace: https://goo.gl/maps/Hs2AetLVe4Z7YS5h9 Seems to be a rather new gate-less installation with Westinghouse LEDs and WCH bases. Most gate-less setups in WA seem to have no bells.

These classic signals on an out of service line at Forest Rd, Capel: https://www.google.com/maps/@-33.555958 ... Akvy_A!2e0 which was one of the few level crossings remaining in Western Australia that didn’t have the rectangular backgrounds on them. Sadly they have now been removed.

I can also confirm that all the crossings on the Midland and Fremantle lines in Perth are unchanged.

I Got the Indian Pacific train back to Sydney and made the following observations: Great Eastern Hwy, South Tammin: https://goo.gl/maps/YMJvKZcF5YWJ62fr7 still retains it’s teardrop bell!

Iodide St, Broken Hill: https://www.google.com/maps/@-31.957297 ... sB8KnA!2e0 still has GRS/WRRS Type D gate mechs. The m-bells were replaced by Safetran Type 3s sometime before 2015.

This out of service level crossing on Menindee Rd, Broken Hill https://www.google.com/maps/@-31.954865 ... TzDFDA!2e0 is unchanged.

The hybrid bell on Holten Dr, Broken Hill: https://goo.gl/maps/3v38xTf9CbMhjGDm7 has unfortunately been replaced by a Safetran Type 3.

The m-bell on the other crossing along Menindee Rd at Broken Hill: https://goo.gl/maps/yVDDSTLu1WBuQtzt7 has had what I think was a WRRS m-bell also replaced by a Type 3.

Bathurst St, Rydal: https://www.google.com/maps/@-33.481914 ... 3egmkQ!2e0 is unchanged.

Changing the location, did another trip to the Muswellbrook area yesterday. This signal on Glennies Creek Rd, Glennies Creek: https://www.google.com/maps/@-32.461429 ... k8qPKw!2e0 was destroyed by a truck last Monday (21st of October). https://www.nbnnews.com.au/2019/10/21/t ... singleton/ The new signal has a WCH gate mech, light brackets, base, UGL lights and a Safetran Type 3. A bit sad as I didn’t mind the original signal despite the WCH m-bell being replaced in 2018 and it still had it’s original SORS sign. In the haste of installing the new signal, some parts of the old one were left on the ground such as gates, part of the gate mech and what I think are counterweights. The gate-less signal also got red crossbucks and a new SORS sign during this time but strangely the other gated signal wasn’t touched and still has it’s original signage!

Muscle Creek Rd, Grasstree: https://www.google.com/maps/@-32.286255 ... UiuSqw!2e0 is unchanged and still has it’s hybrid bells. I also filmed the crossing with the m-bells still sounding healthy!: https://youtu.be/YGEfWfV0dNY

Also got a photo of Brook St, Muswellbrook: https://www.google.com/maps/@-32.263140 ... E80x6g!2e0 The WCH e-bells replaced the MI and WCH m-bells in late 2018.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/139253871 ... ed-public/

Sandy Creek Rd, Muswellbrook: https://goo.gl/maps/vnT9Zk1QPvJUxBWP8 has received new signals sometime recently having WCH lights, bases, light brackets (painted white interestingly), Aldridge LEDs and a Safetran Type 3 that I think may have been recycled from the old signals.

Thanks for the great pictures, looks like you had an awesome trip :TUP1:

The "new" gated signals at Pemberton look amazing, wish more tourist railways would recycle older equipment like this. It's certainly nice to see plenty of m-bells remaining in WA.

Great to hear that the Type D mechs survive at Broken Hill along with the abandoned teardrop bells

Sadly I think the old signals at Rydal may possibly be replaced soon, according to this notice there is a big upgrade happening at the crossing in November http://www.jhrcrn.com.au/media/5602/003 ... -rydal.pdf
