Eastman Road (GA 46), Soperton, GA
*originally recorded on 6-29-20*
Northbound signal: 2 pairs of WABCO 8 inch lights, a WABCO mechanical bell, a WABCO Model 75 gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
Southbound signal: 2 pairs of WABCO 8 inch lights, a WABCO mechanical bell, a WABCO Model 75 gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
On June 29th, Ethan and I got up bright and early to catch a GC L781 that had been tied down in Dublin overnight. Thinking that it'd leave rather early, we decided just to go to this crossing and wait on it, only for it to turn out it wasn't going to come for several hours. However, after a few hours of waiting, GC L781 came rolling through Soperton with four GP38-2s for power.
While waiting for the train as it was approaching in the first video, I restarted the recording to keep the file-size smaller, only for the crossing to activate almost immediately after I restarted it. At least I was able to catch the activation though...
After catching L781 heading back west in Vidalia, we chased it back to Eastman Road in Soperton as I wanted to get a slightly better video of this crossing. Again, we did have to wait a little while, especially since they were picking up some cars they had set-out earlier near Tarrytown.
This crossing is quite a nice one, and was easily probably the highest priority crossing for me to record on this trip. The crossing here features what's essentially a "pure" 1970s (maybe 1980s?) SCL WABCO install, complete with a pair of working WABCO bells! In fact, the only changes to the signals here appears to have been upgrades to the gates/grate lights and signage.
I'm honestly glad I was finally able to hear some WABCO bells in person, and a pair of them that sounded quite healthy as well. As you can see, the closer signal in the first video has also had its gate arm knocked-off, though it appears to have been in otherwise good shape. However, while we did see a crossing along the line get an LED upgrade while we were there, the gate arm here was never put back on during the week we were staying down there, for some reason.
It also appears that when these signals were originally installed, there was a second track here, though it has long since been removed.
They/Them for me, please.
