*originally recorded on 12-16-21*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights, 1 pair of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, a Safetran gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x24 inch lights, 1 pair of Safetran 8 inch lights, a Safetran mechanical bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
This was the third train that I caught on the NS Charlotte District. It was a pretty lengthy eastbound local freight with a trio of SD40-2s for power. Honestly, this guy reminded me of NS A82 down on the Memphis East, which I still miss and wish NS hadn't gotten rid of. There was a friendly crew who gave me a bit of a horn show too, which was nice.
Interestingly enough, each SD40-2 here heirs from a different railroad. The leader was built for the Southern Railway, the second one was built for the Burlington Northern, and the trailing unit was originally built for Union Pacific.
This crossing is another rather nice one, featuring a pair of 1980s NS signals. It appears that NS had actually installed these to directly replace a pair of older SOU signals, but it appears that they chose to re-use a pair of 8 inch lights from them here. The only notable change here appears to be that sometime between 2016 and 2020, NS replaced the backgrounds on the far signal's rear lights with 20 inch ones. Thankfully, nothing else here appears to have changed and the Safetran mechanical bell is still hanging around here.
