Newsome Gap Road, Rising Fawn, GA
*originally recorded on 1-24-25*
Signal on the left: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, a Safetran gate mechanism, NEG LED gate lights, and a RECO gate light.
Signal on the right: 2 pairs of Safetran 12x20 inch lights, a General Signals Type 2 electronic bell, a Safetran gate mechanism, and NEG LED gate lights.
After catching 179, I decided to finish my lunch before heading down to Rising Fawn to wait on my next train of the day, rather than trying to chase 179 south. Admittedly, I probably should've chased 179, as I wound-up having to wait several hours before anything started to get close. Thankfully, just after sunset, I was able to catch my eighth train of the day: NS 11T with an AC44C6M leading an SD70ACe for power. You could definitely tell this trash train was loaded, as it absolutely stank as it passed.
This crossing is another nice one, featuring a rather unnecessarily-tall pair of gated mast signals at it. I have no idea why NS installed signals so tall here, as the gate arms don't seem to be long enough to warrant such. The other signalized crossing in Rising Fawn, with signals installed at about the same time as these, also features signals equally as tall as these ones. Similarly, those don't seem to need to be as tall either. Admittedly, I do always enjoy recording these needlessly tall mast signals NS likes to use on occasion, so I ain't complaining, lol.
Originally, there was a pair of gated signals installed by the SOU back in the 1970s here, it appears. Those signals were basically unchanged from when they were installed up until the late-2000s/early-2010s, when NS replaced them with the current ones. Thankfully, nothing too major appears to have changed to this crossing since they were installed.
I'm assuming the gated SOU signals here must've replaced a pair of crossbucks, as right next to this crossing is a really old sign warning that this is an "unsafe crossing". Specifically, the sign appears to have originally said:
GEORGIA LAW
STOP
UNSAFE RR CROSSING
The sign has definitely been around for quite some time, based on the design of it, and the fact that it's pretty much completely faded. I ain't ever seen similar in any other states either, so I think signs like that must've been exclusive to Georgia back in the day. I'm guessing that they must've forgotten about it when the crossing initially got signals back in the 1970s, which is why it still stands. A couple of photos of it can be seen on the page in the link below.
