On the morning of February 22nd, I got on up and made my way up towards the NS CNO&TP South District near Chattanooga, TN. As I was heading into Chattanooga on I-24, I saw this southbound M585 heading timetable-south with a bit of a neat lash-up, so I decided to race over to this nice little gateless crossing that I hadn't filmed yet to record it. Thankfully, I was able to beat it here with a couple of minutes to spare, and here we get to see my first train of the day: CSX M585 with an ET44AH leading CSX 1900 (the Seaboard Air Line heritage unit, an ES44AH), a GP38-2S (originally built and classified as a GP40-2), and another ET44AH for power! Definitely nice being able to get a heritage unit on my first train of the day again completely by chance, as well as once again getting to see the SAL heritage unit.
This crossing's a nice one, featuring a pair of older gateless signals at it. It appears these signals were installed in the l1960s/early-70s by the L&N, though, in the 1980s, the SBD (or possibly CSX) replaced all of the lights here with the current 12 inch WCH lights, though they were originally 12x20s. Then, in the late-90s, CSX replaced the bell here with a General Signals Type 1 e-bell. The crossing then remained largely unchanged until sometime between 2016 and 2019, when CSX upgraded the lights here to LED and replaced the backgrounds with the current 24 inch ones. At about the same time, the bell was replaced by the current NEG e-bell.
Thankfully, since then, nothing else too major has changed on this crossing. I'm glad to see this crossing still retains its gateless L&N-era signals, along with the older WCH light heads here (even if they are now LED). Hopefully nothing else too major changes to this crossing, but, either way, I'm glad I was able to record it when I did. This is also the northernmost crossing on the mainline of the CSX W&A Subdivision.
