Not sure if it's beneficial financially, but it sure boosts safety ratings for which ever railroad line paid for the signals... See Metra had a 4 million dollar Grant in order to make updates to their engines and other services, and I believe I'm correct in saying this they are the ones who put up the brand new wayside signals on the UP Geneva Sub.

My memory could use a brush up, guess I can't remember things 4 seconds after I see it, haha. Here is a picture of the LED board on the College Ave crossing.

Hmmmmm. Interesting concept. In my mind it seems that it would be too time consuming for people to read what's going on. A universally recognizable symbol is the simplest way to get people to comply, but perhaps being pedestrian signals they can get away with this. With LED technology, why not reintroduce the RXR "STOP" signs that used to be in existence? Throw in some scaled down flashers specially designed for pedestrian signals and there you go ... maybe use the pedestrian red hand signal since it's already universally recognized.

So does that sign only come on if there is a 2nd train? Or does the "ANOTHER" part maybe not light up on a single train activiation? Would be pretty crazy for it to come on with every activation.
What sound comes out of that loudspeaker?
Maybe it is just your camera, but the LED's don't look very bright.

I think i know what the speaker says! I saw a video once of a crossing and right before the second train came through it said "Caution! Another train is aproaching the crossing" twice. I'll see if i can find the video.

One of the signals that got rebuilt for the "signal garden" at the new Tehachapi Depot RR museum was a similar light. It was mounted on the wigwag at Green St, and it lit up saying "Second Train" if the other track was also occupied.

Is this by chance what you were thinking of?US&STeardrop wrote:I think i know what the speaker says! I saw a video once of a crossing and right before the second train came through it said "Caution! Another train is aproaching the crossing" twice. I'll see if i can find the video.

UPDATE 10/8/10:
There are allot of these things now... They have them in Winfield, more crossings in Wheaton, and a few in Glen Ellyn. The ones in Wheaton are under garbage bags again.
