As a child living in the North Hills area, north of Pittsburgh, I believe I noticed that trolley signals had BLACK crossbucks with white letters and railroad crossings had WHITE crossbucks with black letters.
Yes. I noticed the STOP in the red lens.
Also remember some signals with vertical

(O)
(P) on the mast, starting at the crossarm and descending.
