But watching the original YouTube video that started this subject again... the recoil on that gate is hardly enough to injure someone or cause any significant damage to a vehicle or anything.
And it looks as though that particular situation happens quite frequently at that crossing. I'm sure the maintainer is glad that it is on that signal, otherwise he would be out there just about every day fixing a broken gate.
