Still illegal. As much as I like crossing signals, you won't see my trying that anytime soon. Traffic or not... active rail or not.

Catch the signal maintainer working somewhere sometime and talk to 'im.
Depending on what sort of fellow he is he might put you to work all day. ;)
BTDT but back then all it took was a signal dept hardhat.
