Those A frame gates are all over the place in Australia. I guess people don't smash through them like they do here... so they have never made the switch to fiberglass.

Or Aluminum.
Also, many railroads here in the US replaced signals with the wooden gates or replaced the wooden gates themselves.

I bet Lex-C Platsics can fit over any kind of light and I bet the old lights didn't work out for some weird reson I can explain.
And the Gate I believe was for that sidewalk to the right of it. Maybe they removed it or it got vandalized.
