I've never seen anything like that before! Another nice find.

I also found this strange advance warning sign in Gembrook, made from old incandescent crossing lights:

This crossing in the West Footscray train yards are almost always down. They only go up when work vehicles need to cross. There are no bells and the lights don't flash when the gates are down either:

Must be a user operated crossing. The lights probably activate when there is a train.

That could be a possibility, or perhaps there's absolutely no power to the crossings either (which would cause the gates to lower). The lights at those crossings aren't flashing at all.

UPDATE: Just found out that the Murrumbeena Road crossing also uses McK&H gate mechs too! That's two in Melbourne that we know have them. Would like to know of more...

Crossings in Melbourne with McK&H gate mechs (mainly based on the latest Street view images available, I should also add that some of these may actually have WRRS gate mechs since I may of confused them with McK&H ones)...
  • Webb Street, Narre Warren
  • Murrumbeena Road, Murrumbeena (On LXing removal list)
  • Koornang Road, Carnegie (On LXing removal list)
  • Union Road, Surrey Hills
  • Blackburn Road, Blackburn (On LXing removal list)
  • Cramer Street, Preston
  • Murray Road, Preston

That's awesome :TUP1: Up until now I never even knew that McK&H made gate mechanisms. They do look a lot like the WRRS/GRS mechanisms, I wonder if they had some sort of arrangement to make them locally.

There is certainly more older and interesting equipment left in Victoria compared to NSW, up here most of the surviving old stuff is on the Sydney - Melbourne line, specially around Cootamundra and Junee. It probably survived this long because ARTC seem to have a tight budget.

The Murrumbeena crossing also has McK&H lights as well! :TUP1: Look carefully when you see a close up of the crossing...

It's a nice crossing, I like those cantilevers, I wonder who made them. I noticed on streetview that it used to have Safetran mechanical bells https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.889 ... 312!8i6656 and I bet the original bells were McK&H teardrops.

I noticed some of the local business owners complaining about the crossing, I bet they would change their tune if the government was going to acquire their properties to build a bridge!

Came across this picture of an AWS being used at passive crossings around Australia. I've never seen anything like it before.

Actually, it's one of the 50 crossings on our state government's removal list. They're gonna grade separate it by building an elevated rail line over the existing line. It's been dubbed Skyrail by many and it's caused a lot of complaints from people living near the line. They've already dismantled the older weatherboard buildings from the 20's so they can build temporary buildings. This is why I don't like Daniel Andrews...

Anyways, since the Pakenham line runs through Murrumbeena, I pass through this crossing everytime. I'll see if I can a picture of it from the train next time I'm on one (I might being going on one again soon). I'm also planning on recording the on-board station announcements while I'm on it. Also, the crossings at Webster Street, Dandenong and Corrigan Road, Noble Park have similar cantilevers to Murrumbeena. Many other Melbourne crossings have them too.

P.S This is what the crossing is like in peak/rush-hour...
