Found this site about an upgrade of the Ballarat Line http://ballaratlineupgrade.vic.gov.au/about

Seems that Bungaree Loop is going to be closed, resulting in the removal of these level crossings....
Old Melbourne Rd https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.588 ... 312!8i6656
Westcotts Rd (had hybrid bell in 2010) https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.558 ... 312!8i6656
Bungaree - Wallace Rd (was being upgraded in 2009) https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.555 ... 312!8i6656
Bungaree - Wallace Rd (second crossing) https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.557 ... 312!8i6656
Lesters Rd https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.568 ... 328!8i1664

Was browsing the line on GSV and found some more recent images from 2014 showing a couple of gateless crossings with m-bells at Maddingley, no doubt they have been replaced by now.
Kerrs Rd (hybrid bell) https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.700 ... 312!8i6656
Rowsley Station Rd (WCH m-bell) https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.710 ... 312!8i6656

This seems like overkill for a private passive crossing! https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.656 ... 312!8i6656

It's pretty stupid that they upgraded the crossings on the Bungaree Loop, only for the line to be closed a few years later!

Those two gateless crossings with m-bells have been upgraded with gates c.2016, despite the fact that the gateless signals were only installed as part of RFR in the mid 2000's.

Also a part of this upgrade is the duplication of the track between Deer Park West (junction to the Regional Rail Link line) and Melton. There's a good chance these crossings might be upgraded as part of the upgrade, despite the fact most of them had the current signals installed as part of RFR.

https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.711 ... 312!8i6656

If you go back a few years, these crossings had wishbone gates and m-bells (inculding a few m-bell and e-bell combos).
WCH m-bell & Safetran Type 3 (replaced a WCH m-bell)
GS e-bell & Safetran Type 3
WCH m-bell & Westinghouse Hybrid
WCH m-bell & Safetran Type 3
Safetran Type 3 (replaced a WCH m-bell) & GS e-bell
GS e-bell & WCH m-bell

Speaking of overkill, take a look at this! It's located on someone's driveway, and it has a fully protected setup with gates!

It's only taxpayer's money, not their own :Curse1:

I guess at the very least they will have to move one of the signals further out to accommodate the second track. Then there will be more train detection and relays for the second track, so a new relay case is probably needed, and some of the existing cable ducts and pits could be in the way. They may decide that it's just as easy to have a whole new installation.

There certainly were some interesting bell combinations on those crossings, but they were interesting (and involved m-bells) so of course they had to go :aaargh:

That crossing still looks dangerous, it needs cantilevers just to be sure, maybe some quad gates too. Better still, let's get the LXRA involved :LOL3:

So I did end up going to Dock Link Road today and I can confirm that it still does have the two WCH mechanical bells and the crossing further up the road still has the Westinghouse hybrid bells.
Sadly though, I could only take pictures/videos of the equipment on the crossing as for some reason even after and hour and a half there was no train in sight...! So I decided that I’d come back a different day.

Idk if it was just me being an idiot or it was the train, but I followed this second link and tried to get the 2:00pm train (arrival) instead of the 11:15am train (departure) in the other link. https://www.artc.com.au/uploads/MTP_201 ... SA-100.pdf
It says that the train is supposed to arrive at this time, but maybe I read the wrong link Andrew it actually arrives at 11:15am that the other link states: https://www.artc.com.au/uploads/MTP_201 ... SA-001.pdf
Could anyone that properly understands timetables confirm this please?

Btw, immediately surrounding the Bear street crossing in Mordialloc was baracades and there were construction workers doing some sort of work on the crossing, but the crossing itself worked fine when trains passed through. I wonder what Metro’s doing to it, it could possibly be resurfacing of the crossing, NBN, or gate mech replacement as it does have old Westinghouse gate mechs.
I did see this crossing malfunction about a month ago as well, an X’trapolis train on platform 1 needed to reverse so it could go back into the sidings and just after the train cleared the crossing and the gates started to go back up, the bells began ringing again and before the hate could finish going back up, it started descending then immediately started going back up then completely shutting off. Must’ve been something with the track circuits.

Pretty sure you read the timetable correctly. The same thing has happened to me at various times, freight trains are not the most reliable and can be cancelled or rescheduled at short notice (depending on customer needs and other delays). If VIC is the same as NSW then weekends are not the best time for filming, as on most weekends in Sydney there is trackwork on at least one of the lines and freight trains are either cancelled or re-routed onto other lines, with vastly different operating times. It's great to know that those m-bells are still around, if you keep trying you will eventually manage to catch a train there.

Ah ok so it wasn’t me being an idiot

Yeah I could understand track work because the two days of 40°+ in Melbourne sent all the tracks and railway crossings into meltdown... Metro was reporting quite a few crossing faults over the two days but it was mostly speed restrictions on the tracks, same story with V/Line.

I’ll try and go either tomorrow or on Tuesday then because the heatwave God’s just wanna see Melbourne burn this year for some reason... Back up to the high 30s/low 40s for us! :Censored:

Found new images of two crossings at Yennora NSW. Both crossings were upgraded from passive to active protection on August 19, 2017, so GSV must have come past just days later!

The first is Military Road which also received a new pedestrian crossing. As per the current NSW "standard", the gated signals are pretty much all WCH equipment, with the exception of the UGL lights.
Before https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-33.861 ... 312!8i6656
After https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-33.861 ... 312!8i6656

I've noticed in the last year or two that most new installations are now using WCH junction boxes and brackets to mount the UGL lights, wonder why they stopped using UGL brackets? They may as well be using WCH lights too!
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-33.861 ... 312!8i6656

The pedestrian crossing has Aldridge "Don't Walk" lights which I haven't seen on a new installation for several years now, they were previously using UGL lights everywhere. Interesting that they didn't install swing gates
https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-33.861 ... 312!8i6656

Train https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-33.861 ... 312!8i6656

The second crossing is on the nearby cycle path, it also seems to use Aldridge lights.
