There's a set of preemption signals here in Tampa.

Although they operate in tandem with the signals up ahead, I have seen them out-of-sync from the main traffic signals as well.

Re: Google Maps Scavenger Hunt
They are very common in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. When a crossing with preemption signals activates. The Preemption signals go to solid red while the main signals go to flashing red for the street with the crossing and the other main signals go to flashing yellow. I've only seen a few here in Ohio (not in person with the exception of an abandon one that no longer exists).ZachL wrote:That's what they are called.freebrickproductions wrote:I call them preemption signals.ToledoRailfan wrote:The "before signals" (could not think of a different term) are old incandescent signals while the signals at the intersection are modern L.E.D signals. A pair of almost completely original SAL US&S "micro-cantilever" signals!

Re: Google Maps Scavenger Hunt
A unique one indeed, but that signal you're thinking of is most likely the A/C indicator on that relay case. The gate light on the relay case is probably what tells the engineer that the crossing is functioning properly.ToledoRailfan wrote:Odd signal. Classic crossing:
https://www.google.com/maps/@34.1029419 ... 312!8i6656
Well that's one way to do it...
https://www.google.com/maps/@34.09864,- ... 312!8i6656
Wind guards mounted a bit lower than normal:
https://www.google.com/maps/@33.9975094 ... 312!8i6656
Not usually a fan of modern set-ups like this one, but I really like this crossing for some reason:
https://www.google.com/maps/@33.9765848 ... 312!8i6656
Also, the wind guards here are mounted rather low as well.
Active crossing:

This crossing has some RACO 12x20 inch lights!

Ever wanted to see the backside of an LED?

Could actually be a reflector, but it's honestly hard to tell.

I like how they installed pedestrian signals. The line that breaks off of the other line right at the crossing is quite cool too.freebrickproductions wrote:

Here is a cool old signal. I don't know what it is for but if I had to take a guess, I would say that it is for the lift bridge and the signal activates when the bridge lifts and either goes off when the bridge has been opened for a while, or when there is a train and/or locomotive there, or when the train crew knows ahead of time that the bridge is up. https://www.google.com/maps/@41.4919817 ... 6656?hl=en
