This crossing in nearby Rochester was upgraded in June 2010, but looks like street view drove it again and we finally get to see the finished product... https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-36.360 ... 312!8i6656

If the signal was installed with the gates then it does seem a bit over the top. Unless the area gets lots of thick fog just like Robertson where they did the same thing for Hoddle St, which is also 50km/h https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-34.587 ... 312!8i6656

Browsing the ARTC website and found this notice about level crossing upgrades between Maroona and Ararat. The interesting thing is the track is managed by ARTC but V/Line seem to be doing the upgrades, I guess ARTC don't mind if someone else is paying! https://extranet.artc.com.au/docman/Doc ... ?990721852
There are also some kind of level crossing upgrade works scheduled for Griffith during May. Details are a bit sketchy but John Holland could possibly issue a separate notice with more detail in the next week or so. http://www.jhrcrn.com.au/media/4099/ctn ... pgrade.pdf

I believe those gateless signals at Park Road were installed in 2003, and going by the fact that pretty much every crossing between the SA border and Ararat now has a Safetran Type 3 e-bell, chances are it has been replaced...
On the subject of "cashed up", the Victorian State Government is gonna announce this year's budget tomorrow, and I have a feeling it may involve more crossing removals...
Metro, why do you keep removing Mechanical bells?!

With a state election later this year, I'm sure that Dan will announce lots of funding and more crossing removals. There will probably also be more money to upgrade the remaining gateless crossings on the North East line.
All things going well, I should be in Ararat around May 12 (give or take) so hopefully I can check for any remaining m-bells, but I'm betting that they will all be gone.
Has anyone ever seen this photograph of a level crossing that someone photoshoped a ufo into in order to make a hoax? I remember seeing it a long time ago but I don't remember where.
