Re: Google Maps Scavenger Hunt
Some trains (mostly Metro) I've found on Street View:
One going under the Were Street bridge: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.924 ... 312!8i6656
Another one stationary at Highett station: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.948 ... 312!8i6656
You can make out one in the distance: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.902 ... 312!8i6656
Yet another stationary train (this one's at Rosanna): https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.742 ... 312!8i6656
Three badly damaged Comeng carriages (from left to right; 305M, 1003T, & 306M): https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-38.006 ... 312!8i6656
In Nov 2012, these three cars (306M leading) were coupled up to another set (583M-1022T-589M, full consist 306M-1003T-305M-589M-1022T-583M) when they were involved in a collision with a truck at the Abbotts Road. One passenger in the leading car suffered a heart attack and died at the scene. You can see pictures of the recovery operation here: http://vicsig.net/suburban/accident/dandenong-south
As said above, all three carriages were badly damaged (especially 306M, front was wiped out completely) and you could of seen them from the Cranbourne line and the South Gippsland Highway until all three cars were scrapped in May 2014. See here for pictures of the train before the accident: http://vicsig.net/index.php?page=suburb ... ype=Comeng
More active crossings...
South Road (Nov 2007): https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.927 ... 328!8i1664
Highett Road (Apr 2013): https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.948 ... 312!8i6656
Warrigal Road (Nov 2007, you can see the train approaching the crossing): https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.988 ... 328!8i1664
Poath Road (Jun 2013): https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.894 ... 312!8i6656
Springvale Road (Dec 2009, Metro obviously covered over Connex's logo on the station sign. As I've said before, this crossing is no more!): https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.948 ... 312!8i6656

Diamond Street (Sep 2008): https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-37.711 ... 328!8i1664
Not active, but this is a really weird crossing. One of the tracks is grade separated is runs under the road. The other, runs level with the road. It also has a mechanical bell on one side, and an E-Bell on the other: https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-38.144 ... 328!8i1664

Re: Google Maps Scavenger Hunt
Some interesting images showing upgrade works at a crossing in Sydney. It is located on Parramatta Rd, Granville.
The signals are manually operated from this signal box (I think it's called a tower in the U.S.?) https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-33.832 ... 312!8i6656
These images from 2010 shows the old signals. The crossing had WRRS/GRS type B gate mechs with wishbone gates, there were 2 WRRS m-bells. The lights for the gated signals were McKenzie & Holland and the median lights were Westinghouse.

https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-33.832 ... 312!8i6656
The next images from April 2013 show the westbound gated signal has been replaced, it now has a WCH gate mech and e-bell. The old eastbound signal remains with the wishbone gate. There is also track upgrading work taking place, you can see a train loaded with concrete sleepers (ties) and some workers at the crossing.

Also found a video from around the same time, sounds interesting hearing a WRRS bell and a WCH e-bell together http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGurwjMab9I
The next images from May 2013 show the other gated signal has been replaced as well, the median signals were never touched for some reason. The track where the train was previously standing has been torn up for replacement.

The old gates have been dumped beside the track https://www.google.com.au/maps/@-33.832 ... 312!8i6656
July 2013 and even more track upgrading is taking place, the median signals have been painted. Note the gate is also roped up.

I noticed in April 2013 that both gates are roped up also. Re: Google Maps Scavenger Hunt
Yeah it's normal practice to have gates roped up during track work. Although these signals are manually operated, the crossing has an island for each track which prevents the gates from rising until the crossing is clear. That train parked right near the crossing would still be on the island so they have switched off the signals and roped up the gates.cabman701 wrote:I noticed in April 2013 that both gates are roped up also.
